Engine upgrade?
« on: December 05, 2014, 10:41:56 am »
Hello Everyone my name is Shane and I have a question for everyone.  I have a 1986 GMC 2500 High Sierra  single cab. long wheel base with a 5.7 and a 400 trans.  I want to rebuild the engine give it a well deserve do over.  I  need to haul a 32 ft fithwheel with it once every couple of months and I build old Triumphs motorcycles on the side and I deliver in my 6x12 enclose dual axle trailer.  My issue isn't the rebuild of the 350 it's how do I keep it smog compliant(Dang Cali...lol)and still get the power I need to drive it and haul with it?  Also any recommendations as far as a shop goes to do the rebuild and everything in sandiego or even as far as long beach would be helpful.

Your Help would be greatly appreciated.

Shane, I am not familiar with California smog but it should pull a trailer just fine with a stock rebuild.  Are you looking for more?  I don't know the restrictions with California so hopefully someone there will chime in.

I appreciate the reply.  I figured it would be ok with a complete stock rebuild but I figured if I am going to rebuild it why not give it a little bit more power than from factory.

Shane. Welcome.

There are a few ways you can upgrade your engine and still be smog compliant. Here in Cali, as I am sure you know, there is the function/emissions test and the vision inspection during a smog check. Some performance parts are built to still comply with the requirments. Most smog legal performance parts come with what's called a "Carb" sticker. This sticker is placed on the inside of the engine compartment where it's easily visible.

Here are a few smog legal parts that should come with a carb sticker.

-air injection headers, various manufactures, including hooker.

-camshafts, mainly Comp cams but other manufacturers as well.

-performance catalytic converts, MagnaFlow and others.

-carburetors, holley and edelbrock mainly.

-intake manifolds with egr valve ports, edelbrock mainly.

It depends on how far you wanna go and spend.  You can also get smog legal cylinder heads too. But if you want to retain a mostly stock or original with a few upgrades then a intake, carb, headers, cat converter and a proper tuning with new cap, rotor, wires and plug will really go along way. If you want to have the original engine mostly intact you can also have a machine shop deck the cylinder heads and port polish the heads to clean up rough areas and such. If your gonna do a complete rebuild then that's the best time and just do it all at once. Again how much do you wanna spend.

Try calling Summit Racing, get on summits website, ask to speak to a sales associate and ask about what smog legal parts they have available.  There are alot.

My buddy did a Comp cams k kit and top end, intake, carb, headers. He passes smog and has roughly 340 hp and 380 ft lbs torgue. Somewhere in that area anyway. His truck runs excellent.

I appreciate the info LTZ C20, My plan is to spend no more than 4000 on the rebuild.  I was thinking pretty close to those very same numbers from your buddies truck 330 to 350 hp 350 to 380 ft lbs torgue.  Who did he use or or did he do it himself?  If he used somebody are they close to san diego?
