UPDATE--valve seals in.  Rubber O-rings also.
There was only one old o-ring in place, hard and stiff.
I had trouble getting the new O-rings to stay in place in their grove...they slid down when I put the springs on.
Not sure I got it right.
Any tips?

Upon further review of the diagrams....I need to compress the springs more and put the o-ring on after the spring, then the keepers.
What exactly do the O-rings do...anyone know?

Correct.  But, be very careful to avoid shearing the o-rings as you slowly release the spring compressor and seat the retainers against the o-rings and keepers.  Be patient and take your time.

The square-cut o-rings minimize the amount of oil that seeps directly down the valve stem past the retainers from the rockers and valve tips.
