Help! I'm not even sure where to start!
« on: May 08, 2015, 01:08:45 pm »
I have had my c10 for about a year now, last year I did a tune up with a battery, starter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, new timing chain, oil pan, valve coveyours and gaskets(Forgot to order washers) and shocks. I recently purchased an edelbrock 1406 to replace my factory carb, and a new edelbrock mechanical fuel pump as well.

My truck now is hard to start cold, but after 3 or 4 tries it will fire up and idle high. It will also take a few seconds to grab a gear and go.It will also sometimes die out if you stop giving it gas. I also notice I lose oil pressure and oil if I drive for more than an hour or so and it seems like I lose more if on the  highway(which I avoid in this old truck). I did some reading and now I realize the 5w30 also wasnt the best oil for me to be putting in the truck either..

So today I decided I would rip off the old carb and see what I could mess with in the garage. I did see some oil sitting up top and was wondering if I needed a new intake gasket or whatever else I am missing or need. I know these forums are the best place to ask so I took a bunch of pictures to get advice on what to replace first and what I am going to need, because I am seeing oil underneath as well.

Here are some of the pictures,I found something sitting behind the engine caked in crap, and I am also thinking of ordering a transmission rebuild kit(i do have a th350 right?) And these might give a clue where all my issues are coming from

I did resize the images kind of small but I can get more/better pictures if needed. I was also told I had a vacuum leak as well(I did hear it pretty good)

You can't just replace something and expect it to work. Switching out carbs is one of those things that is going to require patience and time to get it to run right.

Looking at those pics it looks like the top end could use a refresh but again this is money, time and patience as there is a lot of stuff to do and replace.

To get your carb fine tuned and running perfect you will need to find and fix that vacuum leak.

Its a Chevy. It leaks. Old engine gaskets fail.
