Emission equpment on a 79
« on: May 13, 2015, 08:47:46 pm »
I just got a 79 2wd and it has a later model vortec engine under the hood. The owner before me had collector car insurance on it and did not need to go through emissions as do I. So there is no air pump or cats on it. If I was to not go collector car reg and need to start taking it through emissions testing. Did these truck have all the air pump system on them or could I just put a set of cats on it and be done. Here is what it looks under my hood.

79 emissions equipment include cat converter, air pump, egr valve, vapor canister, secondary air injection valves in exhuast manifolds, warm air heater duct from exhuast to intake, factory vacuum hose routing and factory timing settings. Also any non-smog certified engine parts will need to be replaced with smog certified parts.

If you don't have to do emissions testing now, it's not worth it to try and re stall and make it all work again.

i would contact your dmv, some states maybe dont care about all the pollution stuff due to the fact of a newer motor is in the place of the old pollution pumping engine that was in. and the levels might be low enough it passes with out any pollution stuff

Ditto on checking with the DMV or your local inspection station...

Emissions equipment also depends upon the GVWR of the truck and the emissions class it when it was built.  A C-30 with Federal Emissions would typically have less equipment under the hood than a C-10 with California Emissions.

Also, emissions testing depends upon the state; for example Texas used to exempt vehicles older than 25 years from emissions testing.

Totally depends on the state
If you're in Cali you're screwed
My state exempts everything diesel, above 9000lbs gvw and 25 years and older

25 and older doesn't even need a title

Go to a car show or cruise in and start asking owners about it

just took a second look at the motor. when you said vortec i was thinking 96+ engine, there not much difference between that motor and the old one. the only thing that might save you is its a 79 and the gvwr might be above the " light duty emissions" which is about 6,000lbs, the epa changed this rule in 79 from 6,000lbs to 8,500lbs.
