Temp Gauge for 1986 Chevy K10
« on: June 12, 2015, 01:14:53 pm »
Hi all,

Have an 1986 chevy k10 its all stock with the 305. I have the gauge cluster with the idiot lights for coolant temp, engine oil pressure, I want to swap out either the entire cluster if I have to with one from junkyard that has an actual gauge for the coolant temp. Couple of questions:

- Can I just swap out the idiot light in the gauge cluster with a temp gauge that I find at the junkyard? Do I have to swap out everything including speedo and all of the other items.
- I am thinking the actual sensor for the engine coolant will need to be replaced in the engine block for one that actually reads to a gauge, where is it located and will it drain all of the coolant when released?
- At what temp does the idiot light for the coolant come on? I had one on my Buick that came on after the head gasket blew lol, that's why I don't totally trust it.

I am doing some offroading with it and I really want to know what the engine temp is while I am on the trail.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!
