The Usual Cam for a 305 question.
« on: February 15, 2016, 11:42:42 am »
Alright, so my camshaft is shot in my 86, and I need a new one. I really want something with a good rough idle, but I don't want to overdo it. Need suggestions.
305, all stock but 60000 watt distributor and 650 elderbrock carb.
700r4 tranny, just re built.

Will probably get an elderbrock performer intake too for when I change the cam.

Why do you want a rough idle?  Rough idle means it doesn't want to run at low rpm, so torque will be roached.  Do you want a wind-up toy -- i.e. something with power up top and no stones at low rpm?

Your best bet is probably something like the Comp 12-230-2.  288hp at 4500 and 372 ftlb at 2500.  That's with a dual-plane intake and headers.

Check out Lunati Voodoo cams. You can get them in roller or flat tappet versions.

Don't be surprised if you get a really stinking exhaust  along with tight LSA cams and the rumpety.
