Vacuum Advance

Where should the vacuum advance hose be connected; manifold or ported source?  Also, what should the base timing be set at?  81 chevy 350, with Holley carb.

On my 79, it goes to a check valve then to the TVS switch on the thermostadt then to a manifold source.
