Front locker and only one hub locked?
« on: March 12, 2007, 12:33:00 pm »
Looking at putting some lockers in my chev 80' 3/4ton, 14ff( 4.10's), gm10 or dana44 not sure, the diff looks like a 12 bolt but only has 10 bolts on cover.  I do alot of on-road driving especially winter.  I was looking into the gov-lok for the rear as it is cheap and not supposed to lock above 30MPH (big problem when its icy, which is most of the time here.)  I was also wondering about puting a locker or posi in the front and locking only one hub for icy conditions to leave one wheel free so not to spin all 4 tires resulting in sidways movement.  Both diffs are open right now.  I will be running 6'' lift and 35'' thornbirds right now but may step up to 37-38's in the future.

Was looking at front diff and pretty sure it is NOT a dana 44 so must be a 10 bolt (cover has filler plug and slightly sloping RH side top and bottom like a 12 bolt)

Any comments?  Any suggestions?

As far as I understand it, a locker is on or off to both axles. But a limited slip transfers power between the axles. As in never powering both wheels at the same time. It does it fast enough that you don't know it's doing it. For the front, if you put a locker and only lock one side, you'll probably put alot of undue wear on the one side. In my opinion, I'd put a limited slip but the only one that I'd trust with 35's is the Truetrac. It has helical gears instead of clutch packs or cones, etc.

I agree you will not like a locker in the front end. Go with a limited slip, or Cable locker like the Ox Locker.
I have never heard anything good about the Govlock but I have one in my 86 2500 and it works great.I plow with it and it performs well. It dosnt try to push me side ways when I apply power. It will spin the truck around in the snow if I want it to though.
A Danna 44 has flat sides on the cover and the fill plug is in a embossed spot in the cover, and pointing directlt ahead. The ten bolt the cover is round the plug is in the cover and pointing off to the side a bit.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs
