converter lock up switch
« on: August 17, 2007, 08:43:15 pm »
 Truck; 1986 chevy C-10 305/350 W/lock up converter
I want to install a switch to control the torque converter lock up. I only want the converter to lock up when the switch is on.
Question; Can somebody post a drawing of where to hook up the wires for this install?
 Thanks, Steve

Well what do you want a pressure switch to do the job? Or are you saying you want to manually switch it on? Manually energizing the TCC solenoid is foolish. If you forget to unlock it or suddenly have to step on the brakes you're in trouble. Your 86 should have already come through with the simplest set up. You need the TCC brake switch, the low vacuum switch and the pressure switch in the trans.

It locks up when I don't want it to. Maybe just add a on/off switch to the factory set up.

I have a th350c in my the 79 Big 10 pickup.  Yeah, 79 model.

I simply ran a hot wire to the plug on the side of the trans.  I cut the wire and ran two wires to a toggle near my dash--turning the circuit on and off.  It works well for me.

At first i thought i would have to get the brake switch and distributor control.  But i didn't have to.  While cruising in high gear with the switch on (locking up the converter), it will automatically kick down to passing gear if i hit the accelerator heavily. When coming to a stop, it will automatically downshift--i dont have to flip the switch off to unlock.  Sometimes i keep it on all the time.  It will lock up when traveling under a smooth acceleration at around 37 mph.  If i accelerate heavily, it will simply lock up when it hits 3rd gear, whether that is 37, 55 or whatever mph.

it works great. I don't know if it will work the same as your 700r4 tranny, i believe they have  a 4 way plug.  The th350c has a 2 way plug, one for negative, one for positive.  i dont worry about the negative since the tranny is connected to the engine (neg ground).

Works for me.

What do you mean? It locks up too soon?

I drive though a switch back curve in second gear come out of the curve going up a slight grade and it shifts to third and then the converter locks up just when I slow for a sweeping right hander. I want to turn off the lock up till I get out on a road that I can do over 50-55 on. The way I drive my 04 I use 1:1 till I drive over 50mph then I shift it to OD.

Sounds like your TV cable is too loose and you're upshifting too soon.
