87 sub 700R4 help!

howdy! this is my first post here but I'm in need of some help with my trans.
I have an 87 sub 2 wheel drive /w the 350 tbi that the 700R4 went up in smoke last night and I'm currently looking for a used trans to slap in wile the original is getting rebuilt. What years and makes of trans will fit in my truck to get me buy wile I save money and collect parts for my rebuild?
For my next question, what parts should I put back in my original trans to make it better suited for pulling say a 12x6 inclosed trailer and my 17' boat and still have a long and happy life? My thoughts we to just pick up parts for a mild performance street trans and go with a better cooler out front.

upgrade the pump, torque converter, sunshell, get the transgo reprogramming kit, servo kit, and add a tranny cooler -you'll be good to go.

Just make sure the used trans you get is chevy bolt pattern, and the correct tailshaft length. Also flush your oil cooler good.

I've found an 89 camaro 700R4, a 700r4 out of another 4x4 sub of unknown year(he thinks 84, 85, 86 or maybe an 87)and one out an 86 iroc. Could I just swap the tail off my tans on to one of these? Also i would have to ask are there and computer controls in the 87 700R4 and is there any thing else I would have to change (gaskets and such). As a side note my speedo started doing funny things shortly after I noticed my 700 was starting to go. it would work till the truck got up to operating temp, the warmer it go the less it was on and then it would just stop working all together.

It's not just the tailshaft length the output shaft determines tailshaft length.

So I found a guy who has my trans that he rebuilt for another guy and the guy never came and got it so I get it for 400$ with a year warranty . Now what is the best way to flush my lines and cool so I don't feed a good trans all the garbage that's in them?

First use compressed air and make sure you have good flow in both directions. Then you can use http://www.ariindustries.net/trans-flush--transmission-cooler-flush.html of course you can probably get it cheaper at your autoparts store or diesel fuel works good.

First blow out as much as you can with compressed air
Then to flush the trans cooler(s) and lines I use a cheap home depot pump up garden sprayer, a short piece of fuel hose and mineral spirits
Drain into a clean bucket, let the debris settle to the bottom
use a coffee filter in a small sieve and pour the cleanest stuff back into the sprayer

repeat as needed

Get a new or remanufactured torque converter
I've had good luck with Daaco remanufactured converters (about $80 bucks)

In fact it dose have a daaco converter in it I was told. I'll make sure to flush the lines WELL! I've never done an auto trans so this should be interesting for sure. Any tips or tricks I should know about?
