New direction for engine transplant?
« on: December 17, 2008, 08:19:29 am »
OK, moving slow on my 86... I have a 4.3L stick in my 86 and have a nice 350 and everything needed for the swap.  I also have a 5.7L with 30K in a '91 parts truck that was an automatic that I would rather use.  What is involved wiring/computer wise that I need to know.  I know I have to get an electric fuel pump.  I have never done a EFI/throttle body swap so I am coming to the experts for guidence.  Ideally I would still like to retain the stock warning lights, (non gauge cluster) with a nice set of aftermarket mechanical oil pressure/water temp under the dash.  I also want to keep the stick shift.  Thanks in advance.

If you have a working donor, you can pull the wiring out of it and replace it in your truck.
You will need at least the sender out of the donor (gas tank would be easier) along with the fuel supply/return lines.  The manual trans should be an issue you only need VSS signal.

Is your 4.3L carb'd?

4.3 is a carb.  I guess I will know more when I actually pull it out.  Gobs of wires connecting to the computer.  As I sort through it all it will probably become self explanatory.  Can I get a sender/fuel pump for my tank or do I need to go with a tank out of a 87 or newer?

You can use any sender up to about 93 in the 86 down pickups.
You don't HAVE to use EFI tanks, but if you have them.....

Great, my donor 91 still has the tank and the PO said he put a new fuel pump on it recently.
