Cant get the mirror to hug the door all the way..

Hey gents I looked around for info on mirrors, and while some was close, nothing matched exactly to my problem.
I have an 83 silverado and it has the smaller sporty mirrors on it. I was looking over the truck and noticed that the mirrors wiggle up and down a bit ( maybe 3/8 inch.)
I thought this would be an easy fix since I had the door panel off.
ANyway, I removed the mirror itself and there is a metal bracket and a piece of rubber under it to protect the paint I would think,.. I removed the bracket and rubber, and there are two plastic rivet things there, that the screws screw into. These two plastic things are stopping my mirror from bolting completely to the door in a flush manner. Can the plastic inserts be eliminated, and replaced with machine screws, nut and washer inside the door, or is that trouble? how can I remedy this flappy mirror? my only other thought would be to modify the rubber gasket thing to fit around the little plastic inserts.
The metal bracket has a slight arch to it as well, should I hammer that straight wile im in there? or is it a non-issue?
Thanks in advance for your replies, Im just looking for a viable solution I can execute myself.
Pete

Are these what your mirrors are secured to?

no although I believe the concept is similar. these are white plastic, appear to have that panel fastner vibe to them. like you press them in and then they just stick. like a wall anchor i guess, but like your picture as well..but plastic/.. sorry so vague.

Why don't you try popping them out and using jack nuts instead. They work awesome. Jusput them in the hole, install a bolt and they squash. Then remove the bolt and use the same bolt to install the mirror.

There's a metal plate that bolts to the inside of the door (right under the vent window track) and has a flat reinforcing plate that the mirror mounting bracket screws to (not the door skin). That's what makes the mirror rigid as the flat plate double-walls the mounting. I can take a picture of one for you if needed so you can find them. It's really the best way of mounting the sport mirrors.....

yes you can get jack nuts at any decent autoparts store or hardware store. You can also use nuts and bolts.

I went out an looked today and all my sport mirrors are at Toolmasters garage, so I couldn't get a pic of how the mount, but. Igosplat described it as it should go.

ok yeah, I have the small metal part, but it has been "arched" somehow from the PO torquing too much or something.
I do NOT have that piece that appears to go inside the door itself. can you tell me a bit about that part or part set>? Im looking at my mag now and I havent found it yet.
