Temperature guage
« on: January 01, 2009, 11:41:58 am »
The temperature guage on my dash sits at about a quarter of the way from cold to hot. Obviously being winter it's cold, but it'll never get hotter, even when I've been driving, and sitting in traffic.

I bought the truck in the winter months so not seen what it's like in the summer, is that normal...?

Both of my 79's do the same thing. I run 195 degree thermostats in them and it doesn't overheat and produces decent heat in the winter. I just chalk it up to a quirk of owning something old.

That's the same as mine! The cab heater's really warm after only a couple of miles!!

I'm thinking maybe the guage itself is gone, or sticky. When I started it today I noticed it was already at a quarter (is that 45 degrees...), then when I started the motor the guage dropped to zero, then slowly crept back up the 1st quarter mark.

My '79, once warm, won't move either.  I put a 4 core radiator in it and know it doesn't get hot.  The Tstadt is just working well, not allowing the temp to go any higher.  Nuttin wrong with that.

The correct spelling is GAUGE. The shortened version GAGE is also acceptable.

Is 'Gage' the more common US spelling?
... do they get sticky with age? Wondering if maybe I should replace it, however having said that it's not really a problem I suppose, so long as I keep an eye on the coolant level etc if the gauge/gage is gone.

Cheers Old Whity, will see what happens.
By the way very embarrassed about my incorrect spelling of 'gauge' in the title of this thread!

Don't be embarassed! I was just bustin. Most people spell it gauge. I would just replace the sending unit if you think it's operating temperatures are correct.
