np205 4 low problems
« on: January 22, 2009, 07:17:32 pm »
on my 76 k20 with an sm465 and np205 tcase, when im wheelin and i put it in 4 low some times it wont compleatly engage it has the low gearing but the front tires dont spin i have to pull it out of 4 low and put it back in a few times for it to engage i have no clue what causes this and or how to fix it, maybe a new tcase? anybody had similar problems with np205? dont particularly want to replace it 205's arent exactly cheap.

It sounds like an issue with the shift rails. One rail controls range and the other controls 4wd.

It sounds to me like when you engage low range, the 4wd rail isnt fully engaging (having to try it a few times). You might try to put the transfer in 4hi and crawl underneath and spray both rails with some wd-40 and run the transfer through the ranges a few times.

If nothing else, you could always take the rails out, modify them, and install a twin stick setup. That would give you complete control of your front and rear axle independently. Give you options of Rear Hi&Low, and Front Hi&Low, not to mention it just looks awesome!

One rail controls range and the other controls 4WD

And I thought left one controls the rear output and right one controls the front output

im pretty sure that the np 205 doesnt do the front and rear wheel drive option or whatever you want to call it i think it only does range with one stick and 2 and 4 wheel drive with the other im pretty sure you gotta have one of those fancy atlas transfer cases for all the options front and rear wheel drive, range, 2 and 4.

One controls two-to-four wheel drive, and the other controls hi to low range.

One controls two-to-four wheel drive, and the other controls hi to low range.

It does on a NP203 not a NP205 Read this!

oh ok that makes much more since then how i was thinking about it. i could see how puting twin sticks would give you the front or rear wheel drive seperate option. just not on the 205 because the way its ingeneered. thanks for all the help and info.

I've heard of this happening to 205's when the linkage and/or shift rails get worn out enough.  I like the idea of the twin stick...could probably make your own setup with a little research.

well that would make since it was a ranch truck for about 20 years and to get in and out of the ranch you gotta use 4 wheel drive. and i do quite a bit of 4 wheelin so its been used to say the least.
