...so any tach I get I can hook to the alternator?
here is the instructions for the one I want

It says to hook to coil or to a tach terminal for an electronic ignition. Will it work?
I'm jumping in to this thread as I want to do the same as you - replace the 5" fuel gauge on a 6.2 diesel, with a tachometer.
Now, gasser engine tachs work by inductive pickup from the ignition...obviously, that's no good for a diesel. Also, a gasser tach, typically, goes up to 7 or 8000 RPM...for a diesel, that will look silly of the needle never gets past 3000 RPM
But then, after much browsing, I found that Dakota Digital have an adaptor unit that will convert the output pulse from the alternator W/P Terminal so that any gasser tach can be used. It costs US$65 and can be seen

Autometer is the only brand I can find and the gauge is just 3.5" diameter. Of course, you could pull the 5" tach from a scrap GM HD truck but how these connect, where you had no tach before, I don't know.
Then there's the LCD digital 'TinyTach' - which has a pickup around an injection line for sensing - but I don't think it would look as good. and is a 3" x2" rectangle.
BTW - did you ever see these links?
