Working on FYI Please Help
« on: February 19, 2009, 10:31:35 am »
I have been a member of this forum for a while now and I have noticed that there is not always a clear answer to questions with out posting a new thread or searching every thread out there.

I would like to post an FYI thread in the wheels and tires section of tire sizes and wheel sizes that work on our trucks.  Ideally I would like to post pics with tire wheel combos.  i would also like to post a backspacing thread showing some common backspacing on wheels and the poke or tuck they provide.

I am already starting to accumulate some of the information i need, but i would appreciate any info or pics of setups being used.

Please feel free to email me at mattevandavis@msn.com

Thanks for your help in advance.

Matt

Matt, you can post all of this here and it can be compiled on the forum.  In the end we can edit out the extra and post it in the tech section...

Any post that people feel are informative can be moved there or compiled and moved.  You just gotta let us know.

What about a FAQ section Capt?,  This would be a good place to put questions reguarding tires, and wheels, drops, lifts, performance, etc. It may result in more editing work for you, but will ease in searching for common info.

Have posts that start with:
What tires and wheels fit my truck?
On the first post, put factory tire sizes, bolt patterns and back spacing, and let the post go from there with pics and info on what members have on their truck, then the person in question, can go through and see what combo they like.

Next:
How low can I go?

First post is how low with a static drop with stock tires and wheels? (If anybody knows this info, you do)
Then, the same as the tire section. Members showing what they have

Then:

What lift do I need?

What is the biggest tire that will properly fit on a stock 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton, or dually that is either 2wd or 4wd before I need a lift?  Then info such as 4 inch lift clears 34 inch tires max, 6 inch lift clears 36 inch tires, etc, etc. Alot will disagree with the size of the tires versus lift, but we should have the specs that will clear without cutting the fenders or rubbing.Alot of info on the first page of this post, but it will answer alot of questions.
Then, once again, the members can post what they have, what mods are needed, etc.

I am sure there are alot of other frequently asked questions you see on a regular basis that can be added.  I know on my site, it will have something similar to explain who, what, when and why certain trucks were made. Just a thought. ???

That is what the Tech Section would be for so we already got that, now we just need some articles.  Like I said, alot of them have been asked.  I just haven't moved them.  If you see something you think should be moved, let me know and I will put it there.

I know a lot of info is out there.  It is on this forum that I have found most of it.  My goal is not to add something that is not there, but compile it in one location, for people like myself that are hopelessly lost on these subjects.

I also want some photo explanation to be included.  Im thinking of takings some photos of setups and adding them in the thread.   Other wise member pics wouldnt hurt either.

I am a VW owner and a member of a vw fourm too.  I have found the DIY and FYI forums very informative.

Thanks for any help, input, photos, etc are appreciated.  With any luck it will turn out decent.

Matt,
Just make a post and put it all on there and people can contribute the info...  I will put out there what I find relative when I get a chance.

OEM OPTIONS
1/2 ton

5 x 5  or  5 x 127
15" x 8" with 4" Backspacing
15" x 7" with 4" backspacing

"Steel and Rally both were 15x7 with 4" backspacing.  There was an optional 15x8 Rally with 4" backspacing in the latter years also..."
"There were only 2 sizes offered by the factory, 15x7 and 15x8 both were 4" backspacing.  The rim size will be stamped on the wheel lip also..." Captkaos

BACKSPACING
"Back spacing is the distance from the mounting surface to the rear of the rim.  For example 4" backspacing will measure 4" from the mounting surface to the outer edge of the wheel if you placed a straightedge on it." Captkaos

Offset is not the same as backspacing.while backspacing measures from the mounting surface to the edge of the wheel, offset measures from the mounting surface to the middle of the wheel (when it's standing vertically)

The easiest way to measure backspace is to lay the wheel face down onto the ground so the backside of the wheel is facing up.  Take a straight edge and lay it diagonally across the  inboard flange of the wheel.  Take a tape measure and measure the distance from where the straight edge contacts the inboard flange to the hub mounting pad of the wheel.  This measurement is backspace.

LUG PATTERN / BOLT CIRCLE

"Bolt circle is the diameter of the circle that the bolts are centered on.  GM pickups are 5 on 5".  Or 5 lugs on 5" bolt circle."

great idea!!

i just posted a question along these lines Friday, capt. was kind enough to reply.
i agree that all this information should be compiled in one nice article, most likely it has been addressed in pieces many times before.
