Looking for pics or to buy some mounts - 5.7 Diesel
« on: March 10, 2009, 12:39:50 pm »
I bought a 1981 C10 with no motor and would like to put a brand new rebuild 403 into it. Having a hard time finding mounts from a 5.7 diesel around here. Would like some pics to see what the mounts look like, or would be willing to buy some mounts if anyone has some.

Ralph, I belong to an Olds site, at times I see guys mention that they have some. I can put a post in the "Wanted section" if you would like. The 403 Firebird's had a similar mount design, you may check those out, they were much more plentiful in the day. I have made a couple sets for my Olds powered trucks. The basic design is flat stock across the Three mounting bosses on the block with some version of mounting the upper half to it where you need it to line up over the bottom half on the crossmember. Here are a couple photos. If you need any futher help, just ask! Lorne

To clarify, the truck was a 305 model, but I don't have a small block to replace it with. For the 403, I have all the brackets and mounted equipment, so I thought the easiest way to get an engine in the truck and get moving is to use some diesel mounts. The part I am most interested in is the frame brackets and the relationship for the mount that attaches to it. I can get new motor mounts cheap from Napa or another parts carrier, but I cannot find anything for info on the frame mount brackets.

The transmission won't bolt up to an Olds...

Ralph, The diesel upper mounts are all metal. The flat plate in my drawing goes on the block & there is another bracket type part that slide down over the Chevy lower rubber half (I didn't know for sure it was the exact same one, but NAPAonline shows it to be) that the through-bolt slides in. I have the Firebird mounts I could take a photo if you want, they are similar. On mine, I'm using Olds upper & lower mounts. A guy I know welded the Chevy clamshell onto a homemade 3 bolt plate & used the original Chevy lower mount. More than one way to skin the cat. You are also going to need a BOP transmission case or an adapter.
Chop, The 5.7 diesel was based on a 350 Olds block, all modern ('64-'87) Olds engines have the same mounting points, so the easiest way to mount any Olds in our trucks is to use the diesel mounts.

Thanks Lorne, I knew the 5.7 deisel was similar to the olds 350 because a buddy converted his engine to gas with heads and intake from a gas engine. It was a stout little engine, but I didnt know about the engine mounts. Now I do, thanks again.

Chop, Yes, next to the ultra rare NASCAR blocks, the diesel's are the best (strongest) Olds block there is. With a diesel block bored some & a turned down 425 crank, you can built a bullet-proof 440ci small block :o Lorne

Thanks for the info, Haulin'. I haven't been able to find a diesel truck around here to see how they are mounted. Pictures of the firebird mounts would be great. Another thing, what is the measurement on the mount you drew from the front hole centerline to the first stud centerline? Looks like it would be pretty easy to fab up. As for the transmission, I have a dual pattern TH350 that I will be using.

Ralph, Yes, those are the 403 Firebird ones, very similar to the Diesel. The word "solid" is mis-leading, the bottom half has the rubber like the Chevy mounts, unlike the Olds mounts I used with the rubber in the top half. I put a post on one of the Olds sites in the "Wanted" section, we'll see if we can scare up a set for you. The measurement from the front hole to the stud won't really tell the whole story...I used the early Olds 2 bolt bottom half & drilled the holes in the frame brackets to match, kinda set the engine in, figured the placement (partially by the A-body headers) marked this & that, then took it back out & finished them up.
I used a multi-bell TH350 in my 4x4 when I did it, that is a nice way to go. Have Fun! Lorne

Chevmobile, Yes, those are the same...not exactly the same as the truck ones, but I'd think they could work without much trouble.
Irish, The multi-bell case wasn't used in our trucks, however it's a nice way to go if you are considering "alternative power". I have one in my 4x4 also, just a matter of changing the output shaft to the 4x4 when it's being rebuilt. Lorne
