Elec Fuel pump install

hey guys my truck was having problems with fuel reaching the carb, i sent it to a friend of a friend of mine and he determined that
my lobe went on my cam to drive the mech fuel pump. So we decided on an electrical one, he put it near the switch for the dual tanks, fabbed a bracket, and poof done.

so he did some trouble shooting and installed the elec fuel pump, ran the wire and wired it up.

He is trying to charge me $500 Ca for this, its sounds pretty dam outrageous to me?

oh yeah and did i mention that when i checked the pump there was a leak on one of those lines!

Sounds like you're getting gyped. How did he verify the lobe on the cam is bad? If it's true you could have replaced the cam and lifters for $500 bucks/

Did he use a fancy Aeromotive pump?  I think a professional could install and wire an in-tank pump in less than two hours and this ain't an in-tank; so it can't be the labor that was so much.

Fix that leak yourself, before going anywhere, fuel leaks are dangerous (a safety tip from Capt Obvious).

Ive only seen one cam flatten out on the fuel pump lobe, and that was on a 350,000 6.2 deisel. We just put an inline pump one the frame rail from NAPA, and I think it was less than $75 for the high pressure pump. You're definatly getting the short end of the deal.

he said he measured the distance that the rod comes out to push the spring on the pump, he said the carb is fine and i know i wasnt getting flow to it. I wanted to replace the cam and lifters but i was afraid of waking up the engine and having something go on me down the road, since i'm on a student budget i just bypassed it till i do a rebuild.

He also said that he has never seen this lobe go, the other ones all the time but not this one.
The pump is a used one, nothing special, couldnt even tell me the flow rate, also charged me $100 for it.
I fixed the leak when i was under there, i will also have to fab a heat shield because the smart cookie decided to mount it about 4.5 inches away from the exhaust pipe, if it gets warm enough under there i will have to move it.

I called and tried to find an electric fuel pump and nobody seemed to have one, only high pressure and i was told that it would not work with my carb (rochester 4bbl).

i'm guessing that this job should of been max $200 not including parts right?

That's way too much...our local Oreilly has holley e-pumps and also those cheap little Mr Gasket ones that cost $30.  If you're just looking to get it on the road until you find a good pump, I'd get the cheap little pump.  Just don't lean on it too hard or expect it to last a lifetime and make sure to use a filter before it.  We have one of these on my neighbor's Jeep(Chevy 4.3L) project and it's been working fine for the last few weeks.
  Summit sells their own brand of e-pump for around $60 or so for the low performance one.  You may want to give them a look.  But don't let this guy charge you $500.

  Holley "red" electric fuel pumps run between 4-7 PSI which should be fine for your carb and won't require a regulator. It cost about $110. $500 for this job is outrageous. For that kind of cash you could build a completely new fuel delivery system.
  Off the top of my head I would guess,
  New fuel tank $150
  Fuel pump $110
  A.N braided lines and fittings $200
  Fuel filter with AN fittings $30
  Oil pressure switch $10 (cuts power to pump it pressure drops or motor stalls).
  Obviously you may not need all of this but if your going to spend $500 on your truck you should be getting more than a used fuel pump and lines that leak.

Ok dude First off dont pay this bill. Second. The lobe did not wear off. No way.  Not gonna happen.  I would bet money that lobe was fine. Pull a cam out of a 300,000 mile block and tell me what lobes have wear on them?  Pump rod lobe always looks great. 

Second. You could have added a fuel pump inline your self for $150. A holly red is lower in PSI but a Holley blue is bit higher maxing out at 14psi which is fine because it comes with a regulater.  A holley blue runs for around $130 and you would have spent another $10 for fittings. No big deal and not hard to do.      Under the bed of the truck is where the lines for both tanks meet. You could have tied in right there at the main line running up front. Mounted pump to frame rail and been on your way.  YOU ARE GETTING HOSED. Give him $250 and tell him to take you to court for the rest.

Got my chev back, lets just say i made sure i didnt over pay lol
seems to drive ok, but still missing the kick when i tromp on it though 
but i still have to check the timing and replace the rotor and cap.

  I dont understand. It kicked more before he did the fuel pump?   You did'nt tell us what you ended up paying. How well did you make out?   Timing is two mins.    Cap and rotor spent? Or just in need os a cleaning?  Save a few bucks and clean the contacts if they are not worn down which they should not be.

lol sorry, i had a 1980 c20 with the muncie 4 spd, when you stepped on it you would move, this one takes some time getting there, almost like my secondaries arent opening much, but more testing etc is required.

i ended up giving him two hundred even and told him to stuff the rest, he even took the new fuel pump without saying anything! 
i cant say i'm a big fan of this pump, i still dont know how i missed all those holley aftermarket pumps etc, still kicking myself.

the cap and rotor i get to check today as well as the timing, what is the best method for cleaning the points?

i will take some pics of the pump and block off soon to post.

Points?  really?  I think you meant best way to clean cap and rotor. Brass wire brush all the way.
