jug doesn't hold water?
« on: May 18, 2009, 01:49:11 pm »
I noticed that my radiator overfill jug never has any water in it, and whenever i top off the radiator, the jug always spews some water out the top. I guess. You can get a better idea from these pictures. But no matter how many times i fill the radiator to the top, and then fill the jug to the fill line, it always empties itself somehow. The truck runs pretty cool though, around 170. Maybe that is just the way it wants to be?

Do you fill it to the cold level? It looks pretty nasty. Is your coolant in good shape?

Yeah the coolant is new. I did a radiator flush when i got the truck cause it looked brown. But even now when you open the cap you can see new green fluid, with brown streaks and haze in it. I guess i am going to have to do another flush eventually.

I noticed that my radiator overfill jug never has any water in it,

I had the same problem, and even went so far as getting a new jug but still had the same problem.

Try loosening the clamp that holds the hose (from the rad neck) connected to the jug, pull off the hose then run your fingers over the outlet.  If there are any sharp points, use a knife to shave those points smooth, basically trying to get the outlet looking like a "O" rather "()".

Once I re-connected the hose and tightened the clamp, my jug has never leaked since :)

Good Luck!

Make sure your radiator cap is in good shape. If the outer seal is not pliable and sealing good, then the coolant will puke out there, instead of going back to the overflow tank. Also, I believe the cap on the overflow should be vented. If it is getting clogged, then it may be pressuring up and spewing instead of venting properly.. Another point on the cap is that if it isnt sealing properly, then when the engine is cooling off, then coolant isnt being pulled back into the radiator, so when you start again, it just overfills the tank and pukes.  All in all, it looks like a radiator cap issue.

Checked the cap, there seems to be two little black rubber seals on there. Both are pliable with my fingernail or thumb. I have also noticed that a small puddle of antifreeze likes to pool in the front left side of the intake manifold. But if i just let the fluid dissipate to the level that it likes to be at, this little puddle goes away. If i refill the fluid to where it should technically be, the puddle returns. Keep in mind the truck never gets hot, the radiator never even gets low. It just gets a little bit low, and the jug is always empty. It never has any at the "Cold Level" line that you can see on the side of the jug in the pic. And from what that says, i just assumed that they made the system so that when the motor was cold, and all was well, then there should be coolant up to that line on the jug. Instead my jug stays bone dry.

Bump. Any thoughts given my other recent posts? Maybe the puddle that forms on the intake is some kind of indicator?

Do you mean near the heater hose connection at the manifold?  Is there a leak at that connection?

Could be a leak at the intake gasket.  Is your oil the right color?  Is your oil level mysteriously going up?  Fill your jug to the proper level and observe where the coolant on the manifold comes from.
