stabilize rust on roof and hood

Hey guys:

The original paint has worn away on the roof and one half of the hood on my 87 short. It is heavily oxidized and starting to pit. what would be the best and most cost effective technique / process / product to stabilize and preserve the worst parts of the metal. I am not a body man but I would like to do this myself.

if its just starting to pit then i would sand it down and primmer it add some paint if you want they actually make rust converter thats a jell type crap also some paint type stuff too but i know blazin will know for sure if they work

I agree get it taken care of now before it gets 2 bad. If u do prime it make sure u paint it also. Primer absorbes moisture and the metal will continue to rust under the primer. I learned that the hard way!

Sand it with a DA, and 180grit, cover it with Chassis Saver, or POR 15. Then prime it with a high build urethane primer. You can get it in spray bomb form, it has the activator in a glass ball inside the can. When you shake it it breaks, and mixes the two parts together. Then finish sand, and paint it or have it done. You will need to cover the Chassis Saver within 8 hours I believe or you will have a hard time getting anything to stick to it.

Someone gave me a POR15 catalog with products and procedures also.

following your advice-
What if I were to just cover the rusty areas with the por15 and leave it at that? This is an every day driver and the color is original faded black paint anyway. Someday I would like to get around to fixing the body and getting a new paint job but not for now. right now my objective is just to stabilize the rusty areas so they do not get any worse.
i would like to keep it as simple as possible.
Btw...  what is the "DA" you referred to?

Dual Action sander = DA. Problem with the POR 15, and the Chassis Saver is they have no UV protection. The will fade and chalk out after 4 to 6 months exposed to the sun.
