Notes on body swap. '83 C10 onto '79 K10 chassis
« on: July 17, 2009, 11:27:24 pm »
Wiring harness is different, so I'm using the '83. Oddly, R & L taillamp wiring uses the same colors in the '83 FSM, but the truck has dark or light green wires. The FSM is wrong there, I guess.
Fuel tank switch & some plumbing differs, using '83 switch and re-routing hose to use lt-side '79 canister vent hardline ('83 is on rt rail).
Using the bigger '83 air cleaner for its fresh air duct the '79 lacks.
Looks like the '83 cab mounts are mandatory, as advised on this board, thanks for that info! ('79 mounts differ quite a bit in height, apparently due to cab brackets.)
Will try to use the '79 radiator (thicker core in my case, and in xlnt condition) with the '83 rad support.
My '79 K cab had the bolt-in floor hump, cut the '83 C cab floor out at the crease provided (thanks to some unsung GM engineer!) and it fell into place. Had to cut some of the floor to the rear of the hump out & swap into the "new" cab. No big deal, I run a body shop.
Sprayed bedliner material on the floor and kick panels and lower rear panel. There will be no rust.
Spray-foamed the gap between inner & outer roof; the '83 roof was surprisingly flimsy. The foam fixed that and will quiet my poverty (no headliner, base trim) ceiling.
Running the floor wiring either through the T-case lever boot or through holes at the firewall & rear "shelf" floor and through the rockers, so no wires on the floor.
Had to swap the '79 4-LOCK lamp, harness & lens into the '83 cluster. No problem except trimming the retainer clip for + power at the fuse block. Ground lugs the same.
More work than I expected, but coming along and a good brain exercise.

The cab mounts must match the year of the frame.

Actually, after checking, that's what I bought: mounts that match the old frame. Sorry for the incorrect info on that.

UPDATE: More progress & notes on the swap...cab mounted, runs & drives now, painting starts this week...
'83 manual brake MC lines are reversed from '79 power MC, not metric thread. I need to check how they operate, and plumbing a proportioning valve into the rear lines may be required.
Fuel vapor can (charcoal canister) plumbing is different; I'm only a "purge valve" away from being done.
'83 radiator upper brackets differ from '79, ended up making my own to use the '79 rad in the '83 support.
Canned the '83 engine computer and about 10 feet of harness and related widgets.
Ran electric choke wire from fuse box instead of the '83 setup.
Starter wire routing differs due to exhaust manifolds: upswept on '83, down for '79; had to lengthen the solenoid wires several inches.
Battery orientation differs, so the '79 battery has its + terminal about an inch from the '83 rad support.
E-brake cable from the '79 connects fine to the '83 pedal.
Looks like the '83 ft bumper & brackets might fit OK on the '79, more on that later; at any rate, my plow mount on the '79 locates the '83 inner brackets.
'83 steering column fit the '79 PS box perfectly, though it appeared length would be a problem when measuring both of them from the firewalls.
Hope this info helps anyone planning a similar project.

Glad to see this, my swap I'm planning will be similar, although I'm also shortening the frame to fit my shortbed, and I'm using an '83 c10 shortbed body going on a '76 k20 frame.

Your not alone here for sure. There are alot of ambitious projects going on. This site keeps me motivated to get into the garage. Mine is a 1986 vin# with a pile of parts attached to it. About 6 years ago I put a 78 frame under my 86. That was easy compared to a 2x to 4x conversion that I am trying to find the time for now. An evening a week is taking forever... Luckily like I said this side keeps me looking forward to it.
