Seat Bracket 83 K5
« on: August 06, 2009, 01:33:29 pm »
Does anyone have a picture of what the stock driver's side seat bracket should look like on an 83 K5 (not sure what years were the same, but I'm pretty sure it's different than 86 and up)?  A picture of the bucket would work as long as there is some metal showing as there are only 2 or 3 types to choose from.

I took mine to the upholstery guy and he said he thought it had the wrong seat bracket in it.  I've been looking online for a good example for a while, but have had no luck.  I thought I'd check here.

Thanks!

Sam

Thanks Chris!  I'm pretty sure that's exactly like my driver's seat.  The driver's seat was bent and someone put 2 4" sleeves under the seat bracket -- so a 5" screw goes through the seat bracket, through a 4" sleeve and screws in.  It's odd.

Now is a good time to upgrade to the newer style seats.

Got a pic of what it looks like?  Yours should look like the ones I posted if it was factory.

I don't have any pictures.  The truck is still at the upholstery shop.  Dang thing has been there for 2.5 months now.  I called today and he said he thought he'd be done on Monday...  We'll see!

Thanks!

Chris, I finally got the seats back from Norm @ Norm's Upholstery in Gurly, AL.  He said that the seat had been repaired in the past but that it had broken again, so he welded some bars in there and straightened the seat up to where it was supposed to be.  Said it'd be dang near impossible to bend the seat again.

Anyway, here's how they had it rigged.  See the 3" sleeves between the bracket and the floor...that was their solution when the seat bent.  I didn't think those were factory, but I couldn't find any pictures of how they looked stock.

Before

After (note that I don't have the screws in there yet -- I have to find some short stock ones to replace the mess that was in there)

Thanks!

The only question I have left is whether that model (83) K5 had any type of plastic cover that covered the metal frame of the driver's seat, or not?  I know they had the plastic on models around 85 or 86, but the seat frames had changed (different than mine) somewhere between 83 and 85 or 86.  I wasn't sure what year they started using the plastic to hide the seat frame.

Do you know what I'm talking about?  I attached a picture with an arrow -- obviously those have a different frame than what I have, but I need to know if my model would have also had some sort of "cover" for the seat frame, too....or if it was just open (seat frame visible like it is now)?

I am thinking that if there is no cover to be hand for my particular model, I might use some of the black carpeting I have left from making the bed panels and use it to cover some sort of wooden 3-sided box to hide the seat frame (cover the back and both sides -- more emphasis on the driver's side) and the amplifier.  I think I could make it look like it's something that may have come from the factory.

I think you could make some nice ones with the black carpet it would proably look better any way. but I also happen to have two of those pedestals in my garage I've been kicking around out of the way if you were interested. But personally I like the carpet idea.

What you pictured is the actual frame, that version started in 86.

None of them had covers on them.
