Dipstick help.....
« on: October 22, 2009, 06:44:24 pm »
Ok a while ago I bought a Lokar dipstick part number 5000 to fit on my 79 K10 small block. It is a tubeless dipstick. I thought it was cool, the only problem is, when the engine is at operating temp, it is real hard to pull out. So I bought the flexible dipstick WITH tube, part number 5002.

Here is my problem...The instructions say it needs to fit into the GM factory lower dipstick tube, part number 3951600. I have searched everywhere online to find a picture of what this GM tube looks like and where it goes. A microfiche would help a lot. The length of the part I just received appears to fit right on the block and the upper part attatches to a exhaust bolt. No problem. I am guessing the GM part required is on the inside of the oil pan??? I assume this because the dipstick itself is very flexable, like cable wire, not ridged like a stock dipstick. I guess this required GM tube keeps it from swinging into the crank? I called Lokar but they are already closed.

Any GM employees...can you look up that part number and/or send me a pic of what 3951600 looks like???

Nearly all small blocks actually use a three piece dipstick assembly... There is the actual dipstick, an internal tune and the external tube.  The internal tube is driven into the block from the underside with the pan off.  It's purpose is to keep the dipstick from distorting (or breaking) under windage from, or contact with, the crankshaft.

I can't imagine your engine not having one already (if it's stock), but if necessary, the tube can be robbed from any small block in the junkyard.

I cant remember if there was a internal tube when I dropped in the engine over 5 years ago...I suppose I have to drop the pan??
