Please help I have some control arm / lowering Questions?????
« on: November 14, 2009, 12:21:27 pm »
I am looking for a set of lower control arms that are shorter than stock to hopefully eliminate most of the 1 1/4" of shimms I have under the uppers. I bought the truck already lowered and from my measurements it has a 6 inch drop front and back. It does have drop spindles and springs at the moment. My main problem is that the tires in the front scrub on a bump. If I had as little as 1/4" less on my top shimms it wouldnt rub. My thought is to get a set of tubular lower control arms that are shorter than stock to bring everything in enough to give me back the clearance for my wheels and to put the amount of shims back to a decent amount. Does it seem like I am thinking correct to you guys? If not does anyone have any suggestions?

Not really, are you saying the tire rubs on the fender or the wheel rubs on the control arm? If you eliminate the shims you'll throw off your camber and disturb your caster. Pix?

The tire is rubbing the inside of the fender. When I bought it there were no shims in the upper and caused serious tire wear. I know what you are saying about not being able to remove the shims without throwing the alignment off, thats why Im trying to find a shorter lower control arm set. In theory if the bottom was say 1 inch shorter then I would be able to remove some of the shims in the upper to compensate for the shortened lower control arm when I get it aligned again. It would then also bring in the whole wheel solving my rub problem. I just dont think its safe to shim out as much as they had to when it was aligned. The Alignment shop didnt want to do it either because of the amount of shims, they made me sign a waiver...

Seems to me like your wheels are the issue..... Wrong offset and too tall. Ever think of adding a little more spring? Hard to see without a whole pic of the truck and it's stance.

It is sitting on 22X10s.... the main issue Im having is regarding the huge stack of shims in the upper control arms. Is this normal? I was trying to get it back to a safer amount. fixing the rub was just a perk. I will post some better pics of the outside of the truck tomorrow

I have more shims than you  and haven't had any problems with them, but I would switch to a wheel with more back spacing or a narrower wheel

OH.... So I guess its fairly common to shim these trucks alot. Atleast Im not alone there. I guess I need to run 2 differant offsets because the back is about perfect. Anyways thanks for the help guys

That is normal for the amount of shims on a dropped truck.  You problem isn't with the control arms, it is with the backspacing on the wheels.  It is wrong for the truck and that amount of drop.

Mine had about the same amount of shims in it and it was stock.
