Thanks 73c10, I appreciate it. What are the pros and cons about having a local shop do all the machining and installing of engine components vs. buying one that has already been preassembled? Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything obvious here.

the pros and cons are, if it is no one's daily driver and the engine can be removed from it and no one use the truck for two weeks.....rebuild the existing engine.

If it is someone's primary daily driver and cannot be down for weeks, buy a new engine, and when it is delivered, spend a few days removing old one and installing new one.

You have info attached in this thread how much a new motor will cost through various suppliers.  Get a quote from a local yocal and see what the diff is.  If the shop has good referrals and can bore the block ( or will they hone the block) will they install new pistons?  Will there be a new crank shaft, even if the old one is good?  etc...in other words, have it detailed in writing what they will be doing in the rebuild.  Get a timr frame listed on the contract as well, so they won't hee haw around for a few weeks because you neglected to enter that in writing.  Will they do the complete removal AND installation and hooking up transmission,etc..?  You have to look at all this stuff.
