Brake and parking brake question
« on: December 15, 2009, 07:42:35 pm »
OK so today I replaced all the cables on my 79 K10 SB. Well, put them in. The previous owner hacked them all out for some reason, I think because of the exhaust. It touches the brake cables when taught. The only thing I couldnt figure out, even with looking through my parts catalog where I got the stuff from, is how the equalizer cable attaches to the passenger side under the door. I took a picture of it. The bracket shown is C shaped, riveted to the frame with that hole in it. Im wondering what is missing. The catalog doesnt have a part listed for my truck. Thanks

There is a metal rod that fits into that bracket in the pic and then it extends out a few inches to hold the cable. Tough to explain without a picture but you are missing a piece. Hopefully someone can post a pic for you.
I converted my 81 to the newer style cables that both run up the drivers side.

Those metal clips get pressed into the holes in back of the backing plates that you use to andjust the starwheel adjuster.

Irish, that is the catalog I have. For a 2wd, it says to use #9. #8 is for 81+. Will it still work even though its not listed for 4wd??

Can anyone post a pic of that piece on their 73-80?

OK, cool. I dont have holes for my starwheel adjusters on the backing plate. The holes are on the drums. Ill see if they fit on them.

I'm pretty sure they get mounted on the shoe, not the backing plate.

As far as your brake cable "hooks".  I've got one on the passenger side (no. 9 in the illustration)  Mounting end, I have hooked into a hole in the transfer case mount on the frame rail.

The  pic doesn't show it real well, but the rust colored rod is for my e-brake.

I can get some pics when the snow clears, Just noticed one of my parts trucks has this set up on it. I know it didn't hook to the t-case mount from the factory.

Is that the only hook you have on the passenger side? Im just asking because the catalog shows two on the passenger side under the floorboard. Wouldnt happen to have a better pic, would you?

beastie- mine is a very incomplete setup.  The only hook I have is the one I have on the transfercase mount.  Even the 2 guides in the illustration are missing on mine, but the cables are good and it works.  (actually it was on my list of things to do this past summer  :-\)
