fusible link
« on: January 07, 2010, 11:49:08 pm »
Finally got my clutch in ,transfer case figured out and all lines bled,Then I drove my truck (85 k10 350) for about 20 miles and the whole truck shut down. Turned out to be fusible link on fire wall burned up. I PROPERLY replaced it twice and its still burning out. Am I wrong in thinking this would most likly be the voltage reg. It blows soon as the key goes to ON position.  Thanx Guys

Check the wire going to the alternator and the wires going down to the starter and make sure they are not chafed through rubbing on anything.

If you are burning up links you have a dead short to ground somewhere. Look everything over again thoroughly

I bought a car that had electrical problems like your are having with your truck. The problems are hard to find but real easy to fix when you find them. Keep looking. I bought my car with 80k in otherwise like new condition. All new tires brakes, alt., starter, battery and all new a/c stuff. perfect paint and int. for 500.00 because of the problems. a/c would blow a fuse, battery wouldn't charge and had an engine miss. looked at by quite a few people and not figured out.  an a/c wire was pushed and shorted on a fender crease, fusible was blown becuase of what vile described with wires rubbing by the starter and a spark plug wire was repaired with electrical tape. It took a few weeks to get it all sorted but didn't cost me anything.

Thanks for the words of encouragement 1980c10.I'm not giving up. I got her for 900.00 with a goodwrench 350 with 20,000 miles and all the paper work.So far its new doors ,fenders, clutch shocks ,bushings, starter and a bunch of odds and ends, Got it cheap cuz' the body was Ham boned. OK, I just came in again and I still don't see anything, But it looks like the heater power(red) comes of the link that keeps blowing and in to what i guess is a relay switch on pass. side. Its old and pretty rusted and a line(purple) goes from that to the blower motor. That line looks like the end has been a little scorched. The scorched line isn't near any thing to ground so could this be that relay.

You just put the trans in. Make sure no wires are pinched in the bellhousing to the engine. Check those wires going to the starter. Be very thorough. If this started right after you completed your work it's most likely something that was disturbed during the work

You called it Vile. After checking every thing again, I found two or three wires between the bell and the block. I cant see them but I traced the back lines with my fingers and they run right into the seem. So I guess it's time to start take'n stuff apart again. Hope thats it.  Thanks a million Vile Zambonie
