paint ideas
« on: January 28, 2010, 09:03:26 pm »
Going to paint my '79 Big 10 383 Stroker pickup soon.  I don't like the stock appearance.  The green must be darkened in my opinion.  The metal '70's style trim is going.   This is what i have in mind.  Whadaya think?

presently...

proposal...

That would look good!  I know its harder, but a metallic paint with that scheme would be sharp.

Or instead of black a green so dark it almost looks black from a distance. Both metallic for sure. I kinda like the musturd yellow to break it up, but allot thinner. That color looks old school for these trucks. Maybe some deep dish stock wheels Painted the darker green / blackish color, with stock hub caps that have that bowtie in the yellow color.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

I know you said you wanted to get rid of the side trim, but what if you just kept the top half, or just the bottom half, like these?  Just an Idea, I think that would look real good with this one

Here's some examples

My 75 has just the bottom chrome and I'm doing the same to my 78.  I think it just has a cleaner look.

Thanks for all the ideas.  I'm taking all of them to try to come up the final idea.  After a while with playing with the photoshop stuff, it kinda makes my head spin after a while.

I think if I were keeping a solid color for the whole truck, that hockey stick thing of keeping only the upper trim just may be the thing.  However, I do want at least two colors--perhaps a third that'll tie the two together.  Just trying to figure out what colors and how big the stripe basically now.

Chevyrado, that does look pretty cool and close to what i have in mind, thanks.   That's close to what I intend to do--just not sure if i keep the old upper trim.

My green interior will remain green.  I may have to paint the metal painted parts of the interior and door jams to match whatver green color I choose, which is no problem.

Still looking for ideas, dark gold trim line?, mustard color?, dark silver trim line?, no trim line?

I've got one of those big aluminum wide trim pieces on the tailgate, which i'm not sure I"ll keep on there or how it will look with what i inted to do with the colors and such.

I like the metallic ideas.  I like Vile's idea of no white....that'l make it contrast too much.  Blazin's idea of a dark, dark green for the bottom is also enticing.

I'm obviously the minority on this, but I like the stock appearance.  I mean really, when was the last time you were driving down the street and passed a clean freshly restored looking old chevy truck like that?  You just don't see that sort of thing.  When I lived in Ohio a few years back I saw a couple of great old trucks at cars shows, and the trucks getting the most attention always seemed to be the stock appearance restorations or survivors.  Like this one.

i agree with you rainman, it's just that

a) the trim molding on these 79's are a devil to work with and put back on

b) the stock green color just doesn't appeal to me

c) the white in the middle and on the roof, well, let's just say, I don't care for.

But, I agree, most of the old trucks do have a pleasant color scheme and look snappy sharp when redone the stock way.   I got a good deal on this truck when i bought it 15 yrs ago and am tired of just living with the color scheme. I just wish the interior wasn't green...that limits my options.
