well heres my story i was driving down the highway at about 65mph and felt a small vibration and before i could pull off to check things out it shook like crazy and dropped the rear drive shaft at the transfer case, the drive shaft bounced off the road and ripped the eye out of the back of the shaft and sent it sliding out from under the truck down the highway. so i thought lock it in 4x4 and and lock the hubs limp it home, well truck would not move in fourwheel drive so i called my dad and he came to my rescue and towed me home we got to looking things over we locked the hubs in again and shifted the transfer case to low and it moved forward but found out i have no reverse and when i shift to reverse and step on the gas it pukes tranny fluid out on the ground we found the case of the tranny to be cracked right in front of the transfer case. so my tranny case is shot and my rear drive shaft is basicly junk now also, i have tracked down a tranny and transfer case and rear drive shaft from a local salvage yard for 375 bucks.
Has anyone ever had this happen, is their anything i can do to keep this from happening again, also is it possible to get the case to repair my tranny, and how do i correct my speedo so it reads correctly, right now well before it broke about 37mph on the speedo is 55mph on the road. im not sure what gears are in the truck but its got 35 inch tires on it with a 4 inch suspension lift and 3 inch body lift. thanks for the help and info to come.

Yes make sure your pinion angle is correct and periodically check your u-joints. I launched a rear driveshaft doing 80 on the highway because the trunion cracked. I made it home in 4x4 and picked up the driveshaft the next day on the side of the highway. Worst thing it did was smashed one of my mufflers but could have been worse. A safety loop will help the shaft from ejecting but won't really protect your investment.

Its happened to me as well. Although, my transmission was fine and didnt leak. It was the U joint that failed. Dented my exhaust and dented my cab floor. I felt it coming before it happened. I also suspect it was due to my pinion angle.

Does a 4 inch lift normally have a set of drop brackets for the transfer case cross member? Also i picked up a stock drive shaft out of the junk yard its way to short and smaller tube diameter so im back to square one with the drive shaft. Im guessing that mine was custom made its 3 inch tube, and with the stub slip compressed all the way it measures 57 3/4 inches and the trucks center to center is 60 1/2 inches can anyone verify that its not a factory shaft or any ideas
thankyou for the info to come.

Skyjacker makes a transfer case drop, and they only have one size.

I have a 4" on mine and have dropped the rear shaft at the axle. I lost a bolt in on one of the straps which caused the shaft to drop. Just a reminder to check bolts often.I did not drop the transfer case in mine. You need to keep in mind also when you drop the transfer case, the engine tilts back to the firewall. Keep an eye on the distributor, your fan shroud, etc.........

Ive got plenty of room for the distributor and im running electric fans so theirs no problem their. If anyone has the drop brackets on the trans cross member how much is it, 1 inch 3/4 inch i can make my own kit i just would like to know what the thickness of the brackets are supposed to be so im not making 2 or 3 different sets to get it right.
Also does anyone know how the ball and socket is assembled on the front drive shaft in the cv joint. Im not sure mine was put together right by the previous owner thanks.

well i finished up my truck this weekend its all back together and i dropped my transfer case 1 inch it made my slip stub on my rear drive shaft have the same about of slip both directions so im happy with it. only problem i have now is by dropping the cross member my shifter linkage is out of adjustment but its an easy fix no big deal. Now i need a gas tank apparently mine had some rust on it and when everything shook the truck so hard it knocked some rust loose so now my tanks leaking so now i gotta deal with that.
