Q-jet Question
« on: February 24, 2010, 09:07:22 am »
Im putting new engine in my truck, a 1986 C10 with a 350 bored 30 over with a mild cam. The engine in the truck now is a 4.3 V6 with the stock q-jet just rebuilt. If i put this carb on the new motor would i starve it for fuel or would it be alright?

Thanks,
Tim

86?  Is it a E4ME?  If its not electronic then I think it should work o.k.  You might give up some performance, though.  I think the main problem would be the secondary metering rods, spring, and hanger.  If its electronic you should ditch it--its worthless.  If its not it could be made to work well by someone who knows these carbs.

You have to get a different carb.  No they won't run right by just unhooking the wires.  I only had one E4ME and it ran fine but the adjustment screw on the mixture control solenoid wouldn't stay put.  Every few weeks I would get a check engine light and have to adjust it.  I finally tightened the screw against a washer that set the adjustment about right.  That solved it for me, but it was a pain.  All the headaches of fuel injection without any of the benefits.

The carb itself will be fine. A couple things to check are the jet/primary rods likely have less flow area if this is a "correct" 4.3 carb...may need to change those to closer to the 350ci size. One other thing, the secondary throttle blades are limited to about 60* open on many of the carbs of this age, especially on the smaller engines, this can be altered also. Lorne
