Did the paint change in '87????
« on: March 21, 2010, 09:11:31 pm »
I have an '87 Short Step 2X and the paint has always been terrible!

I bought the truck new in SoCal and the dealer had had the truck since
the model year came out (1986) and it has been setting in the Santa Monica Salt Air
until June of 87 when I bought it off of the lot.   Even then the top of the cab
had to be repainted because of peeling.

Did Chevy use Water Based paint in 87?   I know that Nissan/Datsun did with
their Tennessee factory and had an awful time getting the paint to stick.

True?  Or should I file this under "Urban Legend"?

Nothing surprising about that. GM, Chrysler and I'm not sure about Ford used those paints right about that time and I still see lots of cars from that era with peeled paint. I remember a guy I knew in the early 90's who bought an 88 Iroc. He worked at the GM dealer as a salesman and he said if the paint could come off with the application and removal of masking tape, than it got a free repaint from GM of which his car did. Chrysler had a class-action lawsuit against them or something of the like for people with cars that paint had peeled prematurely.

So the repainted roof, has it held up or was it repainted with the same crappy paint as the factory did originally?

Same Crappy stuff........  At least they were consistent  :-\

I'm in the process of repaint/restore so I'll get a chance to fix it right.

Many vehicles during those years had problems with the clearcoat on GM cars/Trucks.

I worked at a GM dealership in 1993 where all these late 80s vehicles were comming in for the peeled paint jobs.We did them all, berettas corsicas, celebritys, trucks every chevy brand vehicle we would strip them down to bare metal, seal them and base coat, clearcoat. I guess there was a bulletin sent out to many of the GM owners on this problem.I hear it wasnt in the primer but the base coat was put on to thin and didnt ahere to the primer to well and thats what gave the premature failure .... We would do like 2-3 vehicles a week...

thanks
