Converting Electric Speedo to Mechanical?
« on: April 24, 2010, 03:42:40 pm »
I haven't been on here in a while, but I have a quick question.  I have a 700r4 out of I believe a '93.  My question is can I convert the electric speedometer setup in the tailshaft to the mechanical setup which I currently have in the original 700r4 currently in my truck?  (Which died on me last night  :-[)  I know the mechanical setup uses gears... I'm just not sure so I thought I'd ask.  I'll edit this post with more info when I get back from work, I'm in a hurry! Thanks in advance for any help!

Ok, so here's the situation.  I was driving on the interstate and I lost 3rd and 4th gear in my 700r4.  I went to the Jefferson swap meet the next day and bought another 700r4 which is (like I said) I believe out of a '93.  I got the transmission from the swap meet in this weekend, and everything is working great.  All the shifts are good, and it has a strong downshift.  My only issue is the speedometer.  My original '87 700r4 has the speedometer gears with the cable going up to the speedometer in the dash.  On the transmission currently in my truck, there is a speed sensor for electric speedometers.  So would I be better off converting it to electric or going to a mechanical?  I have no idea what either process would consist off, can I get a recommendation/how to from anyone?

Not that it makes a difference but the 93 had the 4l60e the 92 had the 700 with electric sensor. But I would think it would be easer to make the 93sh one work with the mechanical I don't know how but I would just assume but you know what that makes me and u

4L60's were still available in 93 and completely phased out of trucks in 93. So if it is a 93 it's not from a pick up truck. The 4L60E is the electronic trans and will not work without the PCM. So I assume you have a 4L60. You can swap over the drive gear and driven gear onto your trans from the old one.

So how do I get that sleeve off the tailshaft?  I'm assuming it's pressed on, can I just use a puller and try to pop it off? And can I just slide the gear right onto the other tailshaft or do I need to modify it somehow?  I can just use the tailshaft housing from my 700r4 with the mechanical set-up, I just need to know how to move that gear to the other tailshaft.

Well since nobody replied I decided to just wing it myself and see what would happen...

I used a puller kit to pull a metal sleeve-like piece off my old transmission. After the sleeve was off I was able to use the puller to get the plastic drive gear off the tailshaft. Once I had the plastic gear off, I took the tailshaft housing off the newer transmission and was able to pull off the metal gear for the speed sensor. I just tapped the plastic gear on, made sure it meshed correctly with the driven gear, and put the tailshaft housing with the mechanical speedometer set-up on and I was good to go! I did this with the newer transmission in my truck, so of course I had to take the driveshaft off, but the whole ordeal took me only about an hour, good deal!

I figured I'd post what happened since nobody replied, people might be able to use this for a reference if they run into the same situation, it was pretty easy, especially since I was just figuring out what to do as I pulled things apart.

Sorry but I never saw your reply. It's pretty straight forward. Glad you got it situated.

Last I saw you on here you had just lost your truck.  What's the story?  Did you get the truck back or buy another one?
