Just pulled the motor out of the Delta 88!!!
« on: April 27, 2010, 05:30:35 pm »
Well, it all started when someone knocked on the door and asked if I was selling the Olds Delta 88 sitting in the backyard (without a for sale sign on it, FYI). So being tired of people asking to buy the car to turn it into a dirt track racecar, an since i'd rather have that motor in a truck anyways, I told the guy that i'd sell the body only. So some money changed hands, and I told the guy that the car would be ready for pickup on the 30th. Foolishly I waited till today (the 27th) to realize that the guy would be here in 3 days, so I left work early, and yanked out the motor and tranny, separated them and put the motor on the stand, tranny under the stand, and the yard cleaned up, in about 2 and a half hours (defintely a personal record, especially while working in dirt with no plywood or anything). Honestly, there is no point in me writing this story, other than to vent a little, and brag a little. Now off to workout

Must be a Texan thing. I waited til the week before a carshow to swap out and rebuild the rear axle in my red truck. If I had an 8-5 job it would be different, but mine is 6:30 am till whenever the rigs quit calling. Having to do it outside because the wifes show truck couldnt be left outside this time of year. ( never know when a hail storm will roll thru) Its ready to go in, but has to be done by thrusday night. I got to be crazy

Cool.  What motor was it that you pulled?  Rocket 350 or something?

Those Rocket 350's were excellent engines for the day.  For the quality of the motor oil and leaded gas they lasted a good long time.  I remember working for a gentleman in high school 78-79 or so who drove a 72 Delta 88 who was pushing 300K that ran great and didn't burn oil.  I couldn't imagine how long they would last with the cleaner fuel and advancements in motor oil we have today...

No its not a Rocket 350, its just a pre 79 Chevrolet 350, but it runs good so its worth the work of pulling it out. 300K miles back then was amazing, you expect it these days. My 94 with a 4.3 V6 just turned 337K today, and my uncle sold a running and driving 93 C2500 with a 350 that had 402K.

Choptop, I think they should rename Texas Procrastination!!!
