73 blazer title issues
« on: May 22, 2010, 11:22:32 am »
So, I've found a smoking deal on a 73 blazer tub. I mean a stellar deal, tub alone for two bills, I have a buddy with a 2wd frame and another with a 454, I can get this thing rollin for less than 2 stacks. The problem is there is no title with the tub, anyone have any experience getting somthing titled like this? I really want to play with a full vert blazer

ask the guys who build t-buckets? I would think out of anybody they would know, Im sure it varies state to state though. You can definetely get a title for it as long as it passes inspection in your state. I would also call the local DOT/DMV and ask them?

it does depend on the state and the DMV for that state.  Generally though, you apply for a title.  The DMV notifies last known (registered) owners of the vehicle.  A period of time goes by (perhaps 6 wks) if no response, it's yours and the new title will reflect that.  Sort of like abandoned vehicles.

If, for some reason, a previous owner says, "no, it's mine", the DMV will want to know why it hasn't been registered and perhaps have them pay all those years back, and tax history comes into question too. So, most times, they let it go.

You would want to proceed with caution. SOMEONE is the last registered owner through the DMV for the VIN number on it & until you can make it legal that you own that important piece of the vehicle...that SOMEONE can come get it anytime they want/find out you have it all fixed up. Do you know for certain who is the LEGAL owner? Maybe they could file for a lost title.
In Pa, if a vehicle has a tampered with or missing VIN tag, the laws read "the vehicle must be scraped"...again not what you want to have happen once you've done allot of work to it, not to mention any charges (theft, ect.) that may be applicable.
As mentioned, you would want to check with the DMV in your state as to the procedures. Good Luck! Lorne

I'm planning on gettin a title before I start doin much. I was planning on getting it inspected while on the trailer. I don't want to get too deep into it and end up loosing it.

After all that's done I'm going for a cheap roadster, big block and bags. The nights are perfect for open air cruising.  ;D

the thing about that is good luck tracking the previous owner.  The DMV won't share that info without a subpoena duces tecum, basically a court order ordering the release of that info.

Why/how does a vehicle end up without a title in the first place?

Well.....theres a million different ways in Florida it could endup. Someone bought it from a junk yard, Junk yards here dont require titles as long as you pull the vehicle to them. Same with the scrap yard. Also someone could move and leave a vehicle in their ex-room mates yard. hence after a while said room mate sells it. It could be stolen? Florida is known for vehicle theft.

Usually it cause a vehicle has been sitting and the po is gone or its stolen if its stolen and you buy it you lose your money and the truck if you fix it up the po might say I never sold that and again you lose everything unless you have a bill or the tittle from the po. And don't get a title that the po signed to another guy who you bought it off of. This is why it pays to have friends at dmv or a law enforcement officer

I went to dmv after work today. As far as Arizona goes, they provide the info for the po, you then send a certified letter to said po who has 45 days to respond. If the po doesn't respond  a bonded title title is cut. The po can respond with a certified bill of sale or the title then no bond is needed.

I really need to get better about checking my mail, I got a notarized bill of sale in the mail at some point this last week. Tuesday after work I'll have the Jimmy's title in my safe. Now I can go to work, well after I get some $ saved back up, just put out 500 for tires for the 74... ugh.
