Please help asap, rear sway bar info

Will a dual rear wheel sway bar fit a single rear wheel truck? That is my question, I know they have 2 different rear ends but will one fit the other or are they different?

My '85 SWR GMC 3500 didn't come with a rear sway bar or overload springs and I found a guy with a nice Dually that he is scraping Wed.

So please if anyone knows if it will bolt on please let me know, thanks!

I think the leaf springs are the same, if you have the 9 leaf packs are they all the same? I know the U-bolts are longer if you have the overloads. I am also thinking that the overload leaf perch holes are already in the frame?

If you have the Dana 70 axle (which I think all 1985 3500 used) it should fit fine. The measurement you might want to check is the distance between the U-bolts on both axles. If they are the same the sway bar mounts should fit fine.

My truck is a single rear wheel with 14 bolt full floater and sway bar is off of dually with dana 70. Any help would be great. Thanks.

With a 10 1/2-inch-diameter ring gear, the biggest 14-bolt GM rearend looks much like a Dana 70, and is but a few thousandths of an inch shorter in ring gear diameter. This axle is commonly used with big engines and/or overly large tires. It was used under 1973-87 3/4-tons.

DANA 70 Almost identical in appearance to a Dana 60, the Dana 70 is standard in heavy Dodge pickups and GM duallies. The large 10.54-inch ring gear diameter will tolerate much torque, and is suitable for diesel power and/or big tires.

Wow, I was hoping someone would be able to tell me if the sway bar will fit. I don't care about the rearends, my truck has a 14 bolt full floater and is staying that way, the dually has a Dana 70. IS the stock GM sway bar off the Dana 70 the same one that goes on the 14 bolt? Or did GM make different bars for each axle?

Wow I was thinking we were not talking to a blond but if the axles are pretty much the same and the springs are the same then the swaybar should fit over everything and work just right.    but you might have a reverse rotation pinion that changes the whole story

I wonder if both axles use the same U-bolts? If they do I would think it will fit\be the same. Guess I will find out Friday night, looks like I am pretty lucky to find one, from doing research looks like lots of guys have looked for them and never found one, let alone from a clean\rust free truck.

What is the GVW of your truck?  As far as 1 tons go, I have never seen them without the overload set up.  My 86 C20 is a 8600GVW and has the same leaf packs as you describe.

I believe its 9000lbs, it is a single rear wheel reg. cab long bed 1ton. Nothing special over a 3\4ton other then the bigger front sway bar, big rear brakes, and taller\thicker frame.

I don't need the overload springs or sway bar but I do like the way they look and if they bolt right on then all the better.

I think all the duallys came with the overloads but they were a option on the single wheel trucks, most don't have them, from what I have read there were two camper packages and the second came with the over loads and the rear sway bar was a option on top of that. I think you could get a 3 pack over load on the duallys as well as a huge leaf spring pack. Back when you could really option a truck the way you wanted it.

Is your buddy scrapping a clean, rust-free truck?!

(looks like I am pretty lucky to find one, from doing research looks like lots of guys have looked for them and never found one, let alone from a clean\rust free truck.)

Not my buddy, nothing special about the truck, I would save more then this guy is but whatever. At least I am getting the good parts. I am going tomorrow night to get the stuff, should know before I load it if it will fit, I am thinking it will and that they are the same parts.

Although it would be nice if someone could confirm...

I have never seen a 14 bolt with the sway bar, only Dana 70s. I don't think it was an option on the 14 bolt. However, don't let that deter you from getting it. I bet it fits. Gonna find out soon, eh?

Well I made it and...
















It will work, the bar is 1in., the advantage of this factory bar is it goes past the axle to clear the shock mounts. The Dana 70 is larger then the 14FF but the sway bar brackets are made so the U-bolts can work with both axles, where the bolts go is oblonged so you can have a 4in. or 4 3\4in. axle, another words you put it on the truck loose and then tighten it all up together and it works, so I have to use my axle "caps" that go on the bottom of the axle. I will also have to drill a hole on each frame bottom rail for the end links to bolt to the frame, there are no holes for them surprisingly, I thought these frames were swiss cheesed for everything.


On to the overload springs, my frame is pre-drilled for the overload perches so they will bolt right on, the one problem I might run into is the overloads have a different top plate that the U-bolt comes down onto the leafs and since the Dana is larger I will have to re-use mine but I don't know if they are correct for overloads. I will have to take pics of both for you guys to compare.  Only other small snag is I will have to switch the leaf clamps over so they don't hit the overloads, I will work on this tomorrow.

I will install all this come winter, I will rebuild the leaf packs and sway bar as well as sand blast everything and powdercoat it, should come out nice.

Here is a link to the pictures that are in question. I need to flip the leaf clamps, but I see that they are pressed or stamped into the leafs, or maybe I can pull them out, anyone know how that works, they have to be on the bottom like the ones shown so they don't hit the overloads. My current ones are mounted "pressed" on to the top of the leafs.

The other picture is of the top U-bolt plate, there are two different styles, do you guys with 14 bolt rearends WITH overloads have the one that is on the truck now or the one that is just laying on the leaf for the picture? Thanks!

I have seen the rear sway bar on 3/4 tons with the 14 bolt rear when equipped with the deluxe camper special package(has the holes in the boxsides and chrome attachment plates on front fenders)

I have also seen it on 1 ton dually cab and chassis with the 14 bolt and camper special package.
