A/C antics in my '86
« on: June 17, 2010, 08:57:45 pm »
If I remember right, I posted elsewhere that whoever mounted my air conditioner did a real weird job of it, and the compressor is a couple inches too far back to get a good belt line. I'd really like to start taking this truck to work every day, as I'm really not happy with getting into my Trailblazer all grimy and sweaty to go home.
Also, since I'm one of the very few non-smokers (hate the stuff) in the construction biz around here, I thought I'd make my truck into a small non-smoking breakroom for just myself. But... I don't want to run the engine to keep it cool for just the few minutes I'm using it (hard on the engine, that).

A couple remedies I've considered range from mounting a tall camper shell, and running a window unit hooked up to the 110v at work, down to the simplest and cheapest: drawing air through an ice chest mounted heat exchanger, and we have an ice machine at the shop, too. The former could also be powered by a small generator when the truck isn't running (and maybe a big inverter when it is) and can be used in remote locations, such as when I'm basing small airplane operations out of it.
Then again... so can the ice chest.

I still want to get the main a/c fixed regardless, but if anyone has any ideas or other input on the others, fire away.

I would probably just get the truck a/c working and use it. Take the time and money you would put into that other project and sink it into doing the truck ac right. I would just jump in my truck and run the ac during break time. It's not any harder on it than driving down the road, really.

If you were going to go the camper shell route, you'd be better off with a rooftop RV ac setup. When I get my car sold and can start looking for a 6.2 diesel k5, thats my plan for it, albeit for a different reason.

Thanks. I figured that any water and acids created during a 20-30 minute idle will probably be burned off a few hours later anyway, on my way home. So, that takes care of my only real problem with using the engine.
I'd still like to try the ice chest cooler, just for the heck of it.

Sure, but how long will an inverter and car battery power that thing?

Redneck engineering is fine. I think I posted my possum-catcher on the board somewhere...
