Steering Column Mod?
« on: December 03, 2010, 01:16:32 pm »
I have an '84 with tilt steering. I hate how close up the steering wheel comes to me. What is the best way to shorten the column? Is there a kit? ...swap a column from another GM vehicle? ...modify the existing column?

I've seen this question asked a bunch, But I don't think I have ever seen a real answer. I have heard of people swapping in a Telescopic column from a Caddy or some other luxury Car. My 78 K10 was the worse, the 86 C20 and My 85 K1500 don't seem to be that bad. It's probably just me. I don't think there was a difference in length.

I'm looking for an answer myself.

Rob..

Smaller steering wheel is one partial solution.  The 1984 has a thicker back seat foam-pad than the 1985-86.  Make sure your slides go all the way back on your seat.  The column also has about one inch of movement but you have to loosen the clamp under the hood under the brake booster.  Those are a few things to try.

Actually it is 73-81(82) vs 82-91 for the cushions.  The steering column is bolted to the dash so moving it requires modifying the mounting position.

I would look into getting a column out of a van and seeing if it will bolt in, or take a section out of the column and fab up mounts.
