3/4 ton to 1 ton project
« on: January 01, 2011, 11:38:51 am »
Well this is my first post here. i purchased some parts for my 82 blazer project and was really impressed with the customer service, the metal and the quality so i thought i would show you guys my other project i'm working on

i bought this 84 intending to use the motor and parts to build my 82 but after deciding to make a good work truck out of the 84 and have the ability to pull my blazer around and tow stuff i decided to go this route.

i know she is pretty rusty  ;D

tore off the old bed cause it was JUNK

the frame is solid just needs to be cleaned up

here is a comparison of how bad rust can get

picked up a turbo kit for the 6.2L pretty cheap

started tearing the 6.2L apart to build it some for boost

then i got a good deal on an 89 c30 that caught on fire. has everything i need to finish mine off

the truck came from down south and rust free for the most part

then we stripped both frames down

the plan is to take this axle

and throw it under the 3/4 ton

which means i have to remove this

next i have to remove the dually axle and cut all the rivets out and take the leaf spring hangars and use the one from the dually for the 3/4 since the two are different

what do you guys think? any advice on the dually swap or in general?

thanks

This is great stuff. I am very interested in the 6.2 turbo project as my GMC stepside originally had a 6.2. Keep the pics coming.

Welcome from Virginia!

fantastic truck, keep us up to date.  Out of curiosity were did you get your turbo kit?  I want to turbo my new truck, but its a 3 speed so it wouldn't be worth it.  Still though can you give us more info on your turbo kit?

off of craigslist. it has banks manifolds but a rotomaster turbo. a 6.5L turbo setup would work too.

here is a pic of the blazer i plan to pull (the one on the right)

the other blazer on the left is my daily driver currently until i can get this truck done

dually axle is out. also found out that my old 14 bolt in the 3/4 ton was a sf and the dually is a full floater so it's stronger. how much stronger is a ff compared to a sf?

start pulling spring hangars tomorrow after i get out of school. maybe even get an axle back in if we move fast enough.

do you guys know any good sites to buy polyurethane body mounts, leaf spring bushings, etc. kinda want to buy one big kit or if i could get a good price on just the body mounts.

a ff axle is much stronger compared to a sf axle, and look around they offer a ton of poly bushings.

Well it looks like you are moving right along.  You should have a solid tow truck when you are done.  Nice blazer also, keep us informed of your progress.

Sorry didn't answer your question, a lot of people suggest p-s-t on here to get bushings.

thanks guys.

need to start a list of all the stuff i'm going to need soon. it's gonna hurt the wallet but i get excited when a bunch of parts show up.

removed the rest of the hangars today on both trucks. rivets are no match for a torch. tomorrow we start measuring and drilling and hopefully get the axle mocked up. i'll bring my camera and get some more pics too

got the dually mocked up under the 4wd frame. still have some drilling and bolting to do but  8 of the holes did line up.

have some friends that have been helping me out a ton too. wouldn't be as far as it is right now with out them.

hoping snow day tomorrow so we can work on it more
