Show me your mud flaps!
« on: February 05, 2011, 11:07:05 am »
So no cops have cared until yesterday on my way home from work.  Cop pulled me over and gave me a fix-it ticket for no mud flaps!  Gave me 15 days!!  I'm not going to have time to find what I want and get them installed in 15 days!!!  These trucks never even came with mud flaps from the factory.  The Washington code and revised code of Washington are conflicting too.  WAC says must cover 75 degrees to the back and RCW says they have to come down to the center of the axle.

If it were me I would go to a truck stop and get a couple of semi flaps and clamp them to the rear bumper, then search for what you want and do it the way you want to when you find what you are looking for.

With the dual laws, just go with what ever you were cited for, then get it signed off. Ive seen people use cheap rubber floor mats with a weight at the bottom.

on my dads truck he had mud flaps similar to the bracket that was mounted on a semi (tractor) but smaller. It made it look clean and he just cut bigger mudflaps down to size to make it fit and look right. I wish i had pictures but he doesnt have the truck anymore...

I'm thinking about getting some diamond plate and cutting out some square ones for the back and the more triangular shape like the front of a running board for the front. What do you guys think that will look like? Has to be cheaper than what they want for pre-made ones.

Now a fix it ticket is that something that has to be verified by authorized person to say you fixed it???. Your law does say if the wheels stick out past the fenders then flares are needed "like most states" you flaps do have to go to center line of the axle. you might be able to get away with fixing it get it inspected then just taking it back off to me having as foot of rubber hanging under a truck looks real cool ::) that’s something that should just be under semis. If you look at most truck on the road you can see over the axle which means they should have flaps also

Thanks for the help so far guys!  Yeah...form has me taking it to a State Patrol office to get it verified.  Keep any suggestions or pictures of what you did coming!!  I will probably have to do something temporary to get signed-off.  What happens anyway if you don't do anything?  ;)

Mostly I wanted options from people.  Having owned a square body for some time I know that some stuff that use to be out there has dissappeared and others are just hard to find or obscure, but companies are still making them (for example: Warn use to make a nice winch mount for our trucks, but doesn't make it anymore).  No one really makes mud flaps for our trucks and they didn't come from the factory with them.  I'm sure 10 years ago or so someone was making mud flaps for them, but I can't find anything now.  At least nothing that looks good.

What happens anyway if you don't do anything?  ;)

First you get a ticket issued, if you do not pay it then you posibly coud get a suspension on your license if they push the issue.  Trust me it's no fun.

this is similar to what my dad used on his GMC, he bolted the little bracket to the frame and made the arm to the size he wanted. He used 3/4 inch bar instead of 5/8 for extra weight and such.

I'd fight it.
Under Federal Law, a vehicle can not be required to have something on it that was not required at the time the vehicle being built.

US Code title 49 Chapter 301 Subchapter I § 30103
"(b) Preemption.—
(1) When a motor vehicle safety standard is in effect under this chapter, a State or a political subdivision of a State may prescribe or continue in effect a standard applicable to the same aspect of performance of a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment only if the standard is identical to the standard prescribed under this chapter. However, the United States Government, a State, or a political subdivision of a State may prescribe a standard for a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment obtained for its own use that imposes a higher performance requirement than that required by the otherwise applicable standard under this chapter.
(2) A State may enforce a standard that is identical to a standard prescribed under this chapter. "

Since the vehicle is NOT for state use...

TITLE 49 > SUBTITLE VI > PART A > CHAPTER 301 > SUBCHAPTER I > § 30102

"(C) “original equipment” means motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) installed in or on a motor vehicle at the time of delivery to the first purchaser;"

Unless of course you have a lift and 38"s....

Lol yeah the lift kills that fight. You could put those flaps you see on rvs the ones that look like a grass skirt mount it to the hitch get it inspected than take it off

our western hauler has custom semi type flaps on it, but they are welded on to low to the ground and are always dragging on the ground and getting ripped off.
