SM465
« on: March 06, 2011, 02:45:29 pm »
Tried to swap guts from one case to another. The case is different, The bearing in the case on the front is a smaller outside diameter. The bottom shaft, carrier shaft is different from one to the other.  The inside diameter of the bearing that goes on the shaft is bigger that the one that came out of the case we were planning to use. Any input on this would be great. I thought they were all the same.
Trans we wanted to use the case from is unknown exactly what year, its a 4x4 10 spline output which leads me to believe its pre 79. The trans that we wanted to use the guts from is a 79 from a single rear wheel one ton 4x4.

#40 in that exploded view. The two transmissions we have apart that bearing is different size?

Earlier SM465
The earlier era of the SM465 include the 1968 - 1978 transmissions. There were both 2wd and 4wd versions. Internally, they are identical to each with the exception of the transmission mainshaft. The 4wd version of this mainshaft (or "output shaft") has a 10-spline output with a 2-5/8" stickout and an accompanying 4wd adapter housing. The 2wd version has a 35-spline threaded mainshaft compatible with a driveshaft yoke, and accompanying 2wd style tailhousing.

Later SM465
The later era of the SM465 include the 1979 - 1991 transmissions. A minor internal change of the 1st gear bushing and thrust washer occurred, in addition to a change from a shorter 10-spline, 4wd output shaft to a 32-spline 4wd output shaft - coinciding with the change of bolt pattern in the New Process 205 transfer case from a figure "8" input bolt pattern to a round, six-bolt input pattern. This pattern was also found on the 208 and 241 chain-driven transfer cases.

These are both 10 spline outpuuts.

The original 465 from my 82 K10 was a 10 spline also, mated with a 208 case. Maybe they were just using leftover parts in some of them?

I think its a newer trans with and older main shaft. We mixed and matched the best pieces out of the two of them, and got I all back together except the top cover. His cover some how had been broken where the shifter clips into the roll pins. someone had tried to weld it!!! But his shift forks are in much better shape. So we have them both torn apart now. going to swap his forks and rods into the other top cover.

Just curious if you know to put the shifter barely into reverse to get the top plate in and out? Also, to get it in, make sure the reverse idler gear is touching the low gear and put bind on the in and output shafts to hold the idler gear against the low gear so your shifter fork falls right on it.

Have had a few apart over the years, just never run into the two different size bearings before!

Ive seen quite a few people both, break the reverse shifter arm, and looking for a new revers shifter arm because the pry and twist the top plate off and then they have to fish the reverse arm pieces out and hunt for a new one.

Anyone that dumb enough to pry on it till it breaks shouldn't be working on them!

As hard as ive slammed my gears i don’t know what kind of force they would have to be using to break that
