1981 C/K 10 Stepside with 1968 Corvette V-8????
« on: March 27, 2011, 02:12:54 pm »
I just bought a 1981 Chevy C-10 Stepside, would barely run, until I put a new alternator and battery in it now it is running good with a transmission leak. Pretty sure it needs a new seal on it but haven't taken a close look on it yet that is just what previous owner told me. The one thing I am un sure of is the engine and I could use some help figuring this out. I am unable to locate the Engine Identification Number at this moment. It has a 1968 stamp on the engine block so I know the year is right and previous owner told me that it was taken out of a corvette, but he was not the one that put it in there so I could use some help if someone could send me a picture or link to a picture to where the EIN might be at it would be much appreciated. I have alot of rust to clean up off of this ride and if anyone knows what works best to deal with rust please I am open to any and all advice. This is a new project for me and any advice will go a long way. Besides all that it runs good and just needs a little TLC and I'll get it back to looking great in no time.

There is a ledge behind your alternator.  The top of the block post the numbers you find.  We should be able to tell you the original application for your engine...

Thanks for the insight. So in order to view it I need to remove the alternator? I'm pretty sure I see where it is at without taking it out, but it is covered in grime so I am going to have to take out the alternator in order to view it. Then get it back to you after that. It will be on the front side of the block correct? It is raining bad out here today and I don't have a garage at this apartment complex so I will get the number from there another day once get to remove the alternator again.

Diagram helped with seeing where it was found it real quick once I cleaned the grime off the face of the block. There was a VIN number of 1 9N521241 then under that in a bigger font was 040. To the far right, while looking at the numbers, was what I am sure is the EIN, but it only has 7 digits, V1OIOFL,  and that page you linked was showing 8 digits for the EIN. I am going to google it but if anyone gets to analyzing it before I can find it it'd be much appreciated.

Zieg85,
Also the plate that was hanging off wasn't at the top of the block. It was down behind the fan mount down and to the right of the valve covers.

Awesome thanks tons!

So its a 327 with 2 barrel carb. from a full size pick-up, not a corvette lol. Gonna have to let previous owner know that little bit of information.

If you want to be absolutely sure, get the casting number off of the engine. It is the one above the transmission behind the driver side head. That is the only way to tell for certain the displacement.

Thanks again for the help. I will go and find the casting number here as soon as I can and refer to that link that you posted and see what I can find out.

Here is the Casting Number I Just went and found, 3959512. Haven't been able to match it up to anything yet though.

And here is the best pic I could take of the partial VIN and EIN... it sucks I know but its a pain take a good one when that alternator is in the way.

Yeah thats where I get confused though because the top of the block is stamped with "1968", to the right side of the "firing order", thats stamped in front of the carburetor. Then the casting number points to all the "9512" casting number blocks being a replacement block for all different types of engines. To be honest I am not familiar with the term "small journal" or "large journal" if you could tell me a bit more about what that means it might help me out a bit.

Last question being when it comes to the restoration of this truck, is it going to be worth it to rebuild and use this motor?
