painting emblems
« on: April 20, 2011, 08:45:26 am »
I found a set of pretty nice set of fender emblems for my '80 C-10. While cleaning them up. what little remained of the yellow paint inside the lettering washed away. Maybe someone here has redone a set that could give me a couple of pointers. Is there any kind of prep required prior to painting? Is this a rainy Saturday afternoon project with a small brush, or is there a quicker way to do a good job? Who can tell me a color code for this, or what kind of paint would work best? Thanks guys and gals!

I'm in the process of refinishing my emblems as well.  Being as the emblems are chromed, I don't know how well anything will stick.  I'm trying a rattle can etching primer to see how well that does. Going to do the GM Ochre/Argent Silver/Black on the Cheyenne Super badges, then Ochre/Cardinal Red/Black on the Camper Special badges, then finally Ochre/Omaha Orange on the 3+3 badges.

bake,
I ended up going to a hobby shop and talked to someone there about what I would need. They thought the Testor's enamels would be the way to go. Cost $1.49 a bottle. Interestingly they didn't have them and sent me to Discount Drug Mart to get them. Evidently it is because they sell models. Of course it wasn't a perfect match, but really came out nice. They didn't feel that primer was needed, but I'm sure it wont hurt. Are you masking it and spraying?  :o :o That will be quite a feat! I guess worse case, I'll just have to redo mine if it comes off.

Well, I'm definitely going to try the masking/spraying route, and I expect to attain a whole new level of tedium in the process! ::) I'm not at all sure that I can brush it on and be happy with the results (although when I get to the camper special badges I may have no choice).  I have some 454 Chevelle badges that I painted first with an etching primer, then a yellow that starts to approach the ochre (called Equipment Yellow).  While the paint was still fresh, I cleaned away the paint on the edges using lacquer thinner and a combination of tooth pics and Q-tips.  I'll post up a pic of those in a couple of days.  One thing I wanted to do that I've been unable is to paint and then topcoat it with clear.  I've found that unless I've got many coats (or a couple of really heavy ones) the clear penetrates the paint and causes it to lift, effectively ruining it.  :(

I have some spray stencil ink that I'm using while porting my heads... I can get several coats that are very thin... I may play around with that some this week.

I've some times wondered if you couldn't "insert" the paint with a hypodermic needle?

That's an intriguing idea.  While I guess you could draw paint into a syringe from custom-mixed paint from the paint store, it might be more cost effective to perhaps buy it in smaller "touch up" quantities that are premixed...  Possibilities abound!

The lady at the craft shop sold me an awesome paint brush that went down to a really small point and was semi stiff. It was just the ticket to paint the emblems. I probably did them both in about an hour.

I'll have to take the camera next time. It's not at the house. I get so into what I'm doing and have thought several times I should have taken a pic of what I'm doing.

so i painted one of my old emblems tonight just to see what it would look like, i did it black with the inside red. i remembered to take some pictures along the way too, first i sanded it alittle to get the rough edges off then i sprayed the whole thing with some krylon bbq and stove high heat black and then used testors model paint on the inside using a toothpick. i like how it turned out

forgot to take a befor pic but the others are pretty much the same minus a 1
