Sloppy tilt column
« on: April 22, 2011, 08:34:34 pm »
My steering column is sloppy, both vertically and side to side. Feels like it's at the knuckle. Had a fella tell me there's four bolts in there to tighten, and it's fairly common to see the 80's model full sizes with this issue. I've never been into one of these columns. I would not consider him as reliable a source as I would some people here.  Is he right, or am I looking at more than a tear down and re-assemble job?
There are two tools needed, duct tape and WD40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD 40.

Sounds like a classic take it apart and put it back together project.

It is way easier than it looks/seems. I just did it two months ago.

Cool. Looks like I'll need to grab a few of the specialized tools before I attack this. Thanks for the link! Guess I should have used the search feature first.

no worries. you should be able to rent the wheel puller, lockplate tool, and pivot pin removal tool at orilleys or autozone. one word of advice, lay out everything you remove in the order you removed it and keep everything face down or up.
