Truck runs high idle for a while, then dies..

First a bit of background information.

1985 C10 Silverado - 305 -

I've been working on this truck on and off the past couple weeks.

I wanted to take it down to the intake to change those gaskets out - turns out all I needed to change out was valve covers.  I did that, now I'm ready to get it back up and together.

I changed the fuel line, hei distributor (base and all), valve covers, heater hoses and top engine hose, and now am ready to get this thing running again.

I started it without any vacuum fittings on it and it ran high idle for a while, maybe 2 minutes, then it died and wouldn't restart unless I pushed on the throttle and kept the rpm's a little higher.

I figured ok- let me get the vacuum fittings on and this will be great -- so I have all vacuum fittings on except for the ones that ran to the old pcv fittings on the old valve covers (the new ones have a vent on top)  The only other thing not hooked up is the EFE valve vacuum hose - i destroyed the rubber piece and have to get a new one on the EFE part...


So I had all the connections on and tried to fire it up - it wouldn't start at all.

I came back to it about two hours later now and turned it over and it started up.  Did the same thing, though, high idle, then dies after two minutes.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Fix your vacuum leaks and get everything hooked up or capped and then try moving your distributor around. You will need to get it close enough that it will run so you can set the timing.

     When you replaced your distributor was the truck at TDC and when the distributor dropped in was the rotor pointing pretty close to #1 cylinder.

I didn't have #1 valve to TDC - I lined new one up to old position and set it in there.

check to see if your choke is opening as it should (after you check for vacuum leaks).

The choke is long baffle that opens towards the front of the truck, right?  If so, it is fully opened when the truck dies.

My dad'll be up on the 20th, and we'll get the vacuum lines run and probably do a timing check at that point.  Hopefully something simple...
