Starter Troubles

If anyone can help me with this I will be forever grateful.  I have recently put a 350 TPI out of an '88 IROC in my 1973 K2500 GMC.  I also have a 4 wheel drive 700R4 out of an '89 pickup and the stock NP205.  I got everything adapted wired in and all that I went to crank it over and the solenoid engaged the motor spun and that was it.  No engagement at all with the flywheel.  I find it hard to believe this is a shim issue when there was no engagement at all. 

I used the flexplate off the '88 IROC and a starter that matches the application for the trans.  it is a diagonal mounted.  If there is anything I am missing here let me know.  I would love to hear this thing run.

You need the starter that matches the flex plate. Your flex plate is probably smaller in diameter hence the starter gear not engaging with it.

He's right I had a similar issue with a 77 ford f150 once I matched everything up engaged and started..

Well I used my skills as a parts guy and the Camaro takes a 153 tooth flywheel and the truck would have had a 168.  I'm going to do some more research to see If I can find a unit that will work but still allow me to put my inspection cover on.  I can install the Camaro starter but no cover.  Why are there issues when you install no-matching parts... weird

Modify your inspection cover to use the Camaro starter? Or, if you're up to it, pull the engine or the tranny and put a truck flex plate to match the starter on it. Then you can use your inspection plate.
