Starter grinding bad

Hey guys my starter's acting weird O.o It starts fine when I go out and fire it up...but after I cruise around if I shut it off and go to start it up again it grinds bad
Ive read that shimming, correct bolts, heat shield, bracket..can all help. But I just thought it was weird its allways after I run my truck for a while. Thats why im thinking heat could hve something to do with the problem. Anybody know why it would be doing that?

You mentioned it. Make sure the correct bolts are in there and it's torqued to spec. If it just started doing it and everything is tight, replace the starter before you have to replace the flywheel/flexplate.

Yeah I just went to O'Reilly and bought an Ultima starter with a lifetime warranty and a Thermotec heat shield to wrap it in
I figure I might as well start with a clean slate since I have the cash at the moment.

ok I got the starter a bit more than 1/8 away from the flywheel...but my starter still makes a funny noise after I start my truck....its like a gear drive kinda I think its what all the guides call "wine"
If I shim the starter a bit closer will that get rid of the wine? honestly the starter doesnt sound like its turning verry well...sounds kinda slow or something. No grinding noise just the wine after I let off the ignition after the truck fires up. should I even mess with it? It does fire up.
Oh yeah and my flywheel did have a bit of wear could that cause the wine?

I think the starter gear still spins a little after you let off, and that is what you might be hearing. Maybe get under the truck and look while someone YOU TRUST to start it and see whats going on? or at the very least, use a video camera.

And make sure your battery cables are good. Do you have a meter? Do a voltage drop test on the cables.
