question for you shaved firewall guys
« on: September 09, 2011, 05:44:13 am »
I am thinking about shaving the firewall on my 84, it is only gonna be a fair weather truck... so my question is do you guys have any problems with running no heater? I am worried about fogging windows and what not. I know there is stuff you can put on the windshield to keep it from fogging up but not sure how well it works. the truck was an ac truck originally and everything is long gone. I just want to clean up all the holes in the firewall. could I shave the firewall and leave only just the blower motor? sorry for all the questions and long post! thanks for any help!

I would get a blower motor housing from a non a/c truck and keep the heat. When I take my hot rod out I want the heat on a cool night for sure.

The non ac housing won't fit, I guess I could spend the 170 for an ac delete box but I didn't want to.

You can run a heater box under the dash. Once I'm done with my 74 I'm probably going to build a box just to circulate air through the vents. No heat or AC though. If it's a driver, don't delete it as you will regret it. If it's a show rod, weekend warrior etc then go for it.

I'd put the 170 towards a welder and make the non ac box fit or just make a new box.

my old drag/street car had a block off plate and no blower/box/anything. it was ok as long as it wasn't cold out and you had the windows up...the windshield would fog then. i never tried the antifog stuff though. but an 11 second car on ET Streets isnt a daily driver by any means.

To answer your question:Yes, on muggy nights just after a rain, late nights in the fall or early in the morning the inside of the windshield will fog up. Now on to new business.
Why do you say "it won't fit"? You'll need a small piece of metal (4"x6"?) to cover the hole inboard of the non A/C box but other than that, it's a unbolt & install deal.
I've converted a couple trucks to A/C...same deal only you need to cut the hole a bit bigger & drill some bolt holes.
As mentioned, your other option is an aftermarket underdash unit. I do think with some planing & fabing, a blower could be moved inside some way on the plenum since nothing is outside in the box, but the blower.
I'm not real sure just "how cool" it is having all that bare area really is...to each his own. Lorne
