Tire/wheel combo!
« on: September 09, 2005, 01:48:00 pm »
Ok here is a link of the looks I want on my 84 chevy pickup. I want the tire in the front to be lower profile than the rear but not way too much. Basically like this... www.mcmullenargus.com/gal...543&pub=18
I want to try and fit the widest wheel and tire in the rear with a 4 or 5 inch lowered kit in the rear. What would you guy recommend here?
What size tires in the rear and front for the sidewall like that? The front I will probably run about 235 since I like a more skinny tire in the front. My truck is the long bed which probably wont look as good as that short bed but oh well I will have to deal with it I guess.
Sorry if this thread is all mixed up and hard to understand but I am in a hurry and just made a long thread and it didn't go through. Oh and what kind of wheels do those look like to you with the knockoffs? I don't think they are Torq Thrust II's either. Those are the style wheels I want but NOT Torq Thrusts since those are going on my 48 coupe so I looked at Eagle and they have 211's and look basically the same ALMOST. I want a deep look in the rear.
Ok thanks a lot guys!

Oh almost forgot... The rear tire can be just a TAD lower in the rear than in that picture if it has to be to get wider tires back there but not much if possible. I don't really understand all the tires sizes and how they work but still learning. I do understand that a 235-70 tire is more skinny than a 235-60 right? And I am thinking to go with 16" wheels all around instead of just 15. If I don't go with the more pro street look then I will go with 16 in front and 17 out back and just put a 60's series tire all the way around but I dont know yet, hard to decide since it's a long bed.

235/70 is the same width as a 235/60.  The difference it the height.  Metric tire sizes break down like this:

235/70/15

235 = section width in mm (not across the tread, but the widest point.  Different manufacturers vary on this so some have wider tread than others. divide by 25.4 to convert to inches.  235 / 25.4 = 9.25"

70 = aspect ration.  The percentage of the section width that the sidewall is high.  example = 235 x .7 = 164.5mm  The height of the side wall from the lip to the top of the tire is 164.5mm or 164.5 / 25.4 = 6.47" high.

15 = rim diameter in inches

Section height x 2 + rim diameter give you overall height.
6.47" x 2 = 12.94 + 15" = 27.94"

As for the sizes in the picture, I can only guess.  The front is NOT 235/70 though.  More like 255/60 or something. (it appears to be a 16" wheel.  The rear is probably the standard 33x14.5x15 Mikey Thompson tire that everyone uses.  Still, only guessing.

Ok thanks a lot man. I just skimmed your formulas for now since I am about to leave but I am going to come back to that and put it into use. How big of a tire should I be able to fit in the rear without having to move the leaf springs? 12.5 wide? Less? More?

Thanks a lot, your a great help.

How wide is going to depend on you backspacing and width.  From what I remember, you should be able to get at the least 12" in there if spaced properly.

Well I need new wheels as well and I am thinking of going with 16 all the way around on those. Not sure how wide in the rear. I would like to get some nice deeper looking ones. Any idea on what size would fit there? Front I will probably go with 7 and get 235-60 and then back however wide 12 in is in like 275 or whatever it is.
