School me on Vortec heads

85 Chevy C20 350. I found some 350 Vortec heads (and an intake) locally. What do I need to know and what questions do I need to be asking to make sure they're usable and I get a good deal? Supposedly they have already been reworked with only 300mi on them since.

check the casting numbers so you are not being con with a set of swirl port heads. If they were just re done it is always good to know what spring rates are just for future upgrades. take a straight edge to check that they are not warped .

im gonna follow this post......the vortecs interest me also. when u go to buy them they have gm vortech heads and a more expensive vortec head bowtie.........when ppl say they have a strong motor with vortec heads are they using the bowties and the others are crap? or what? regular vortecs are bout 310 a piece as bowtie vortecs are around 700 a piece. sorry.....i think im hijacking your post.

iirc, Vortec heads for a sb will be either 062 or 906 casting number. Stock they are lift limited on the camshaft.  Thin castings so they are known for cracking (if your getting a used set, get them checked.)
