can this be pulled out?
« on: February 28, 2012, 07:40:56 am »
Any way to pull this dent out to get it close enough for a little body fill?  Or your advice on it... cut it out, replace the hood, leave it  :) ?  The rest of the body problems are standard fare, just didn't know about this one.  Need it to be a "10 footer", not perfect.  Thanks guys.

If the rest of the hood is in good shape, you can fix it.
I had a similar dent on the rounded part of the cab above my door and it's amazing how much you can pull dents out and come close to restoring the metal.
I'm no body man but what I would try to do is to spot weld something (to pull on) down into the deeper crevices of the dent and pull the metal back out close to the surface so you can then just skim it with filler.
Here is the primitive way I did mine:
This was the dent

I spot welded in a few bolts to clamp vice grips onto, so I could pull the metal back out

Just required a thin skim of bondo to bring it to the top

I would fix it unless you come across a screaming deal on a hood.  If you can get behind it and tap it out that would be easiest.  A stud puller would do the job if you can't.

thanks guys.  didn't know if i'd end up making it worse being right on the edge like it is.  I'll give it a shot.

To fix it "right" you would most likely need a new hood. That being said if it were me, i would give a shot at pulling it out. Whatever the outcome i would think it would be hard to make it worse than it is now.

I disagree with this statement.  I could fix that and make it look like it was never there and I am not the best body person out there by any means.  As fire fighter said, weld a couple of plugs on the outside so you can use a slide hammer to pull it out.  While pulling it out use a body hammer on the inside to help move it out a little bit at a time. (this does not have a double wall to cover the inside, so you can access the inside, the problem would be the edge part of the hood).
Once it is close, cut off the plugs, then grind flat and use the body hammer and dollies to round it back into shape, (the more experienced guys at this point would use heat with the hammer and dollies to shape it to with in enough clearance that primer and paint would fill in the rest), I am not that good though, but I have got it close enough that after it is primmered and painted it is hard to tell with a magnet that body filler is even there.

That can definatley be repaired but with the price of used hoods I would check around first. I've seen one for free before on craigslist. I often see them for 20 or 30 and I live far up in the rust belt.

I'd go for the repair. If you tap from the inside, use a dolly or bag of sand to deaden the blow. Don't give it the big yeehaa either! The metal has stretched to where it is, it wont go back perfectly. But with small taps, as Bake said, close enough for a slight skim.

I agree it is worth a shot to fix as the effort could stand to be worth it. It's definitely the route i would take. He did say it was a "10 footer." But for a permanent repair i would respectfully disagree. yes you could fix it to make it look it was never there, the amount of filler to put on the leading edge of the hood and in the high stress area could stand to have problems down the road.

I say go for it. If you do it yourself, you'll save more than enough money to do it again should the need arise a few years down the road. Likely there will be something else that will need done then anyways ;)

It looks to me that there is also a raised area behind the dent that probably happened when the hood was hit, bending it down slightly.

One question.....  how did you do that and miss the fender completely?

All the damage was already done when I got it so I'm not sure what happened.  That one doesn't confuse me as much as the wrinkles to the cab.  Can't figure those out either.  Never really talked to the guy I bought it from too much, bought it on-line without ever seeing it in person.  A buddy picked it up for me then I got it from his place a few months later.  I got it thinking it would die right away, but the dang thing just kept running!  Finally started having some trouble so the improvements begin!

here's the cab

the passenger rear quarter was replace at some point, so no telling what happened

The fender was probably replace at some point and the hood never fixed, is my guess.  The cab looks as though it was separate from the fender, is there any damage above or below it ?

No other damage in that area of the cab.  The rear quarter was definately replaced, it has the wrong style gas filler hole.  Haven't really looked hard enough to tell if the front was replace.  Have some similar wrinkles on the driver side up above the door, but very light, so I don't really see them being related, but what do I know?  Also has a crease on the driver side by the rear window.

Anyway, doesn't really matter what happened, I guess.  It'll get cleaned up eventually.  Just kind of a head scratcher.
